What's you favorite cycling underwear?

Go with the 400 mile shorts (also from DeSoto…same website). That being said, the tri shorts are good for long rides too. I race full IM in them, start to finish, and have no issues.

OKay - I’m going to be the first here to say that I wear underwear under bike shorts for road and for tris. For racing I have a pair of silky tight underwear to keep the boys up. For biking I’ll wear just about anything tight. I didn’t know that most people didn’t wear underwear.

I’m going to have to try that now. I’ve been in the dark too long!

That looks comfy…what about a bike short for those 100+ mile rides??

Desoto, Assos bibs, Louis Garneau all work for me. I find LG to be really comfortable, personally.

John

Thank you jess_d! I was beginning to think I was the only retard out there. I’m going to heed this forums advise as well, just hope I dont end up sitting on a runaway pelota.

It all depends on your budget. If you have the cash then get Assos or Castelli. I’d say those are the best cycling shorts I have ever owned. My Assos that I bought in 1998 (yes that long) is still quite comfortable and the garter and fabric has not changed. Castelli is good as well. But these are all cycling shorts and no tri shorts. For Tris, I would recommend De Sotto.

Gentleman be nice… he’s new to ST.

Jars, Jars, … jars… Nothing should come between your boys and the cycling shorts. NOTHING. That is of course if you are wearing proper cycling shorts. Now if you are wearing some beach shorts and those loose and long walking shorts or a simple tight spandex shorts without chamois then the first thing you should do after reading this email is go to the biggest baddest bike shop nearby and get yourself a nice padded geniune cycling shorts.

To reiterate everyone’s point here. Don’t wear underwear whenever you **ride, run, or swim. **

.

Had to fix that little point just in case…

I think pretty much everyone but you is going commando. Maybe you missed the memo.

So did she:

pax___ than you for your oh so gentle response. I’ve got the bike and tri shorts, but have been adding the extra (unnecessary) layer beneath. I come from a running background so I’ve been using my favorite Asics (extremely comfortable for running) underwear under my bike shorts. I’ll save those for training runs when I’m not doing bricks.

for tri shorts, I’m a big fan of LG.
For cycling, I prefer bibs…I do all my training in bibs and only rock the shorts on race day.

Ok - so what’s the rule for women? Do they forgo the underwear too? That could get messy, no?

Bike shorts are made to be worn without underwear as the others posters have mentioned.

Underwear of any type creates additional friction and another layer of fabric to trap heat and moisture. The pad in shorts is designed to be worn next to the skin, with some type of chamois lubricant like Assos or Butt Butt’r or Deez Nutz or whatever you prefer.

Bib shorts also provide additional support since the bib section holds the short tight against your body preventing your anatomy from shifting around.

Who else goes commando?

EVERYBODY! I am lucky enough to not even ever need chamois cream (anti-jinx inserted here) but that is the most you should wear.

EDIT: After the post about women and “that could get messy,” I’m officially classifying this as “Highly Likely and Suspect” on the ST Troll Scale. Either that, or we need to fetch the Oops Scale.

Sorry if my comment offended anyone. Just curious about SOP for the other half.

Worthwhile inquiry. It’s how people learn.

jars, do i understand you to have tri shorts, but no cycling shorts? what you need is the latter for your cycling training. further, the next time we get slowtwitch team apparel made, i don’t think i’m making any cycling shorts at all. i’ll just offer bibs. this is the only way to go for serious cyclists. good bibs with a big fluffy chamois. that, and a nice big gob of chamois cream’ll do ya.

otherwise…

never ride twice in the same short or bib without washing. always a clean pair of shorts for every ride. shower after every ride. no cruising around for hours in your cycling garb after a ride.

finally, my secret weapon. this, not during the ride, but, overnight when sleeping, both feet and crotch, 2 or 3 nights a week, to keep the little animals at bay.

uhhh, you’re doing it wrong.

I wish I wasn’t so late to the party but here comes my reply…“Cycling underwear??? Are you kidding???” I didn’t think there is any other option besides commando. I’ve never had any reason to think commando is not the best and only way.

My favorite cycling underwear is the same as probably everyone else around here - cotton flannel boxers, what else is there?

I’ve done that before- ended up with sweaty flannel boxers halfway up asshole and wrapped around nuts. :frowning:
