I’m watching tv while working out today and their commercial (the one w/ the 42 year old pro volleyball player) came on and claimed that after 6 weeks of using the machine the guy put on 12 lbs of muscle.
Physiologically, is this even possible w/out steriods etc?
it’s possible with a turbo workout plan and tons of protein and vitamin supplements.
my friend (a female no less) was told she put on 19 lbs of muscle after just 6 weeks and dropped 10% of her bodyfat. funny, she still looks the same to me
It typically takes 8 weeks to see any significant gains from weight training. That’s just to see statistically significant gains. 12# is beyond significant, to the point of unbelievable.
12# weight gain in 6 weeks, sure, all new muscle mass, NO WAY!
they never said in the commercial that he wasn’t juicing, I mean, 2lb of muscle a week on a 3x week/20 min workout? suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure… I can’t believe they actually ALLOW those commercials on the air.
Another that gets my goat is the treadclimber commercial and how it says that you burn so much more calories than on a treadmill, I mean, come on!
Given the amount of commercials that they broadcast it seems that unfortunately a lot of people are buying those ridiculous claims.
well… maybe then. you’d also have to tie a rope around your waist and drag a tire around a field while your coach sent a mean dog chasing after you. and the pushups, of course, have to be done with your sister sitting on your back.
I can’t believe they actually ALLOW those commercials on the air.
I can’t beleive people actually think a bowflex makes a good coat rack 3-4 weeks after they purchase one but have stopped using it for what its intended purpose!
The scary thing is that people are believing what they are saying on the ads. TV advertising is expensive and I doubt a company would spend that kind of money if they art not getting a return.
I thought our soceity was becoming more edducated and smarter. However, when I see stuff like this I really begin to wonder about that.
Bowflex is not a bad product, I think they shouldn’t lie as the product is real good (People should not expect that kind of results in 6 weeks though). I have frends who use it consistently and for them it really replaces the need of going to the gym. And the results are visible.
Like somebody said it takes more than 8-10 weeks to develop that kind of msucle be it at the Gym, Total Gym, Bowflex or just old school exercises.
Anyways even if it was possible I’m sure most of us don’t want to gain that amount of weight…
The person was already well-trained fairly recently and was just coming back after a somewhat lengthy layoff (muscle comes back far faster than originally putting it on).
They were vastly dehydrated at the initial weigh-in.
They were on creatine (very easy to put on “muscle” mass that way in a short amoutn of time).
I’m not sure what ad you are talking about but I own the BowFlex that has been featured on the infomercials since last year and have been very happy with it. I ditched my olympic weight set after I bought it, lots of different exercises and you can get a very good 30 minute workout with quick breaks between sets to keep your heart rate up. I don’t have the time to drive to the gym and I got 12 months with 0% interest due to my good credit rating. I don’t really workout to gain muscle mass anyway just a good way to stay toned up and ward off the affects of aging.
