I don’t know - I use nut butter myself, but I don’t think I use it the same way.
Everything we eat is bad, therefore everything we don’t eat must be good. We eat peanut butter so it’s bad, we don’t eat almond butter so it’s good.
LOL…with or without jam?
I bought it because peanut butter is frowned on in Paleo. Not sure about the health benefits but I do know it tastes delicious. Same way with Flax seed oil- expensive and questionable health benefits over olive oil but tastes great so I keep buying it.
seems to have same nutritional info as pb and does not taste half as good, also pb you can use in peanut sauce for noodles and chicken, etc. Cant stand almond butter. Also dont get what the ‘deal’ is.
I just bought a 16 oz (your standard jar) of almond butter at Trader Joe’s for $4.99.
As to the preference for almond butter over peanut butter, paleo folks go with almond because the almond is a true nut while the peanut is actually a legume. Paleos also dislike the high amount of lectins found in peanuts (soy and wheat fall into the same category, and are similarly considered ‘anti-nutrient’ by paleos). Then there’s the aflatoxin factor with peanuts.

Almonds are high in calcium…that is the only off-hand benefit I can think of. That, and perhaps variety from peanut butter.
Speaking as someone who bought almond butter once to see if it was worth the hype and extra cost, and who has been happily buying my crappy and cost-effective peanut butter ever since. I do eat plain almonds sometimes, but not the butter. Meh.
Your problem is that you haven’t tried Soy Butter yet.
But really, don’t try soy butter. It tastes like drywall and probably supports terrorism.
Many cheaper peanut butters have their peanut oils pressed out during processing. The peanut oil is sold at a higher price and then cheaper vegetable oils are used as a replacement. Not all peanut butters do this but I’m pretty sure most do. Natural peanut butter with it’s original oils are pretty good for you, but then you have to deal with the oil separating out. Almond oil might be good for you as well. Whether or not vegetable oil is good for you depends on what you read.

Your advice comes about a year too late. Tried it once, no need to try it again. And yes, I agree it probably supports terrorism.
My wife is addicted to sunflower seed butter though. So are the kids.
I stick with the Smucker’s Natural PB.
Fresh and Easy has it for a price comparable to P Butter.
Less saturated fat, less pesticide than peanuts and a true nut. I actually like it better but I just eat it mixed in a bowl with honey and oats. If I had to pay a double price premium over P butter I wouldn’t go there though.
If you think it tastes like ass none of this matters. Hell, for the record I love peanut butter sandwiches too.
I just went to the store and figured I’d try almond butter…i keep hearing about it on various nutrition sites and triathlete mag.
Well, Basically It is roughly 6 times more expensive and contains the same nutritional information (same calories, fat, etc)
The only difference was there was no sodium in the almond butter, the almond butter is organic (big whoop), and the almond butter is unbelievably expensive ($14 for a small jar vs. $5 for a big tub of PB)
So…What’s the deal? Why do I keep hearing about almond butter?
$6.49 for 26 oz. MaraNatha brand. tastes really good. available at Costco. don’t be an idiot about prices!
What’s up with it? It’s the da bomb that’s whats up…you can get it at Costco for the same cost per oz as Trader Joes non-organic PB…I still use the PB sometimes but LOVE the Almond butter.
I noticed that Trader Joe’s has like 4 different kinds of Almond Butter. Can someone handicap them for me so that I don’t have to purchase them all just to figure out what I like?
To the OP, Almonds > Peanuts.
They shoulda used soy butter instead of waterboarding, much faster result:
“eat this you $%^&* terrorist”
“no, no, I will tell you where Bin Laden is, just take it away!!!”
.
So I guess all nuts are not nuts… i’m just stickin to my PBJ
“Some are actually seeds, often within fruits or even legumes. A hazelnut is, indeed, a nut. An acorn is also a variety of “true” nut, as are pecans, walnuts and chestnuts. But an almond, for example, is a seed inside a fleshy fruit’s (a.k.a. drupe’s) pit. A pistachio is a seed within a fleshy fruit. Pine nuts are seeds. Cashews are seeds. Peanuts are the seeds of a legume. Technically speaking, all nuts are fruits, and a “true” nut is indehiscent (they don’t – by themselves – open to spread seeds), hard-shelled and generally one-seeded.”
It’s more expensive.
Therefore, it must be better, right?
Seriously though, every version I’ve ever seen or tried has no salt added. And I love me some salt, so it’s a no-go.

Forget the almond butter buy Cashew/Macadamia Butter at TJs. That is soooo much better.
It is pricy but it is also very tasty.

You only say that because you’ve never had soy pasta…
(which I once bought in a misguided attempt to up my protein easily…one of the few foods I’ve spat out)
Thanks to this thread I brought a 1/4 cup of almonds as a snack today!
