What's the story with Greek yogurt?

Seems like this has become a “staple” in every athlete’s diet. What gives?

Supposedly a bit more protein, but I tried some and it tastes like crap! @ flavors and both bad. I’ll just eat more of mine to get more protein if I want it, but the difference doesn’t seem to be much.

High protein, thick and creamy but low in calories.

It’s like tangy ice cream or something

Probably because it’s got a nice taste to it and thicker consistency. Also easy to find it plain so you can just add a little bit of honey or jam to it. So many of the other yogurts out there have all kinds of weird stuff added to it.

I don’t remember yoghurt being that much different when I was on vacation in Greece a long time ago… on the other hand when I ate yoghurt in India I was quite surprised by how super runny it was (it was nearly like yoghurt-flavored milk or something)

I wonder if this is another one of those ‘it’s European therefore it must be better’ kind of marketing things…

i like the Faya brand, zero 0% fat. It tastes more like real yogurt as opposed to all the nasty gelatin-like “yogurts” that are sold nowadays. With some fruit and stuff it’s not bad and not terrible for you.

Greek yogurt is good but so expensive; I usually buy a 32-oz container of Stonyfield plain yogurt. Lasts longer and pretty much the same price as a 6 oz Greek one :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not a staple of my diet anymore. I lived there for 15months, and Greek yogurt is thicker than what one may buy in North America like someone else said. It tastes a bit different, but not like tangy ice cream, if you ask me. It’s expensive here in the US, and the size container you get it in here is small. Don’t get me started about feta cheese in US supermarkets either…what a travesty.

no kidding! And good olive oil is hard to come by as well.

My wife LOVES it. I like it too, but I don’t want to bogart her stash.

I think it’s tasty, kinda like a cross between regular yogurt and sour cream. Mixes well w/ various fruit.

Very high in protein, low (or zero) in fat.

Everyone says it’s more nutritious, but it’s just regular yogurt condensed. It’s essentially made by straining the whey out of regular yogurt. The whey is the clearish liquid that sometimes settles on the top of yogurt. There’s a lot of nutrients in the whey, but when you strain it out, there’s more protein per ounce, so somehow that makes it healthier?

At least that’s my take on it.

Fage 2% is your best bang for the buck. 17g of protein and only 140 calories for a small container. Very filling. I put honey and fresh berries in it. The Classic is too heavy for me and more calories for less protein. and the 0% isn’t satisfying.

Most commercial yogurts only about 7ish grams of protein for the same calories and a LOT more sugar.

Not if you buy it at Costco.

clm

Actually it’s only 130 cal.

Damn, it’s all I can do not to make a foul joke right now.

I stand corrected. I couldn’t remember for sure

the Northeast hasn’t seem to have caught on to Costco yet.

We personally love Wallaby Australian style yogurt, especially the non-fat Vanilla. (we tried Greek and did not like it as much)

I love it. I eat at least 2 a day. I love the thick consistency. The 0% plain has 100 calories and 18g. protein and relatively low sugar(7g.)
I only ate the Fage stuff for the past three years, but because of its exorbitant price I recently switched to Chobani, which has been on sale for 99 cents @ my local market. For a treat or if I am feeling decadent I eat the Fage total with honey.

I eat Fage 2%, it’s great but expensive. I like the low calorie, high protein and realatively low suger count as well. That’s why I selected it.
