Can anyone explain to my why asparagus makes my pee dark yellow and stink really bad? I am well hydrated, but after eating asparagus spears at lunch the last few days, my pee is real dark and smells real bad. Its enough to make me stop eating asparagus!
It’s famous for it, I forget the chemistry behind it but it’s not you
.
IIRC, most people lack a certain enzyme in their intestines that can break down the “something or other” in asparagus.
You are in the majority.

That’s a common side effect, but it is soooooo good lightly steamed, served in a delicate hollandaise sauce.
Google says…
yeah. You have the right genetic make up for this to happen. If I remember from my genetics class in 1990 (jeeeeez) there is one gene responsible for it instead of a bunch of genes acting together. Other things that are caused by only one gene are weather your earlobes are attached or not and the ability to roll your tongue. At least that’s what my prof said…it’s one of those strange things that I’ve always remembered.
Forget steaming it! Toss in some olive oil, salt, and pepper - then throw it on a baking sheet under the broiler until it’s wilted and barely tinged with brown on the tips. Cooking it that way develops the most glorious nutty flavors.
When I read the title of the thread before clicking on it my first thought was “It makes your pee smell!”

I have one attached ear lobe and one detached. My genetics prof suggested it was more likely to be born w/o a limb that to have that anomaly. Lucky me.
and depending on which limb, you’d have to change your username to ‘AverageNancy.’

I like it sauted with minced garlic and a sauce made with soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar…
I like the really thin baby asparagus, eaten raw. Sometimes steamed for a minute or so, just to bring out the colour, but still crunchy.
Throw it on the grill. It crisps up real nice. When I eat hamburgers I always have asparagus as the side instead of french fries. It don’t get any better.
I like to cook them in the oven with olive oil and onion or on the grill. By the way white asparagus are not worth twice the price!
