Whats the best rear race wheel for $500 or less

New or used doesnt matter, just price point should be around $500.

Neuvation carbon 50, Hed Jet 90, etc?

Get a rear disc. You can find Renn discs for <<$500 on ebay.

Seriously - The best $500. rear race wheel would be the best $400. wheel with a $100. disc cover from wheelbuilder.com.

+1 for the wheelcover. I have mine on a Mavic CXP 33. Solid set-up.

Yep 400 and a wheel cover
.

I will go with the wheel cover sugestions. X 20? Just got mine delivered and put on a FP60. As soon as the mesmirizing stickers come it will go on the bike. Was very easy to install. Sounds pretty easy to decipher the info posted on this one.

x2 on the Renn…haven’t used one but in the market for one.
I have a wheelcover…too much hassle for me.

x3 on the Renn. I just picked up a very nice used Kaiser for well under $500.

I have used wheel covers all the way back to the JDisc days (early '90s). I just got the Renn last year and it definitely felt faster (no tunnel data on this obviously, but a better bike split in a race course I do 2-3x/year).

The key take away is that the fastest rear wheel is a solid rear wheel; cover or full disc.

X3 renn.

I was just looking at the website for wheelbuilder… Can I really get a wheelcover for any wheel? I’ve got the stock Shimano R-500A wheelset on it… would they make one for this too? Sorry for the threadjack & if this is a dumb question.

Thanks,

Not to pre-empt a classified post (or violate the classified forum rules), but I will be putting up a set of NIB blackwell 50/100 wheels in the next week. Front is 50mm, rear is 100mm, and I may consider splitting them. Only going to be asking ~$1100 for the set, but singles might be negotiable (i.e. in the 500-600 range).

Sure, just tell them what wheel you have and they’ll cut the cover to fit. Heck, you can buy an uncut wheelcover and do it yourself with a pair of scissors but it’s worth the $10 or $15 extra to have them do it for you.

How do they look? (nice or chinsy) Sound? (rattle? or that cool drone that the nice wheels have?) does anyone have a picture of them on something other than a nice, expensive Zipp (As per their site) something cheap… like standard training wheels. Sorry for all the questions, but this is a heck of a deal for a college student like me, who’d like some nice wheels, but can’t afford them.

Thanks,

Neuvations seems awesome. I’m trying to figure out why I should spring for a Zipp when Neuvations are out there?

I’m thinking about getting a wheel cover cut to fit my Hed Alps.

What I have in mind is to bond it permanently to the spokes to reduce rattle. Because the covers are black in color they will absorb heat and will warp on a hot sunny day if they are bonded to the spokes. I know this for a fact because in the 80s I went through this with aero wheel covers I had made. So to keep the ABS plastic wheel covers from warping in the heat I plan on painting them grey to match my 2007 Transition Pro frame.

I think a brand new Renn will only cost you a tick over $500.

I’ve heard some that rattle and some that don’t. See my other post. To make it sound like an actual disc wheel try bonding it to the spokes and hub with spray insulation. If you do this most likely it’ll warp on a hot sunny day. To keep it from warping you’ll need to paint it a light color. I had a white one that I rode the living hell out of in the 80s and that thing was great. For whatever reason bonding the wheel covers to the spokes seem to help keep it in true. It was sort of heavy but sounded like a real disc wheel and rode great.
