I’ll run a 50K next weekend. Per the info sent by the RD, NUUN is the drink they’ll provide (along w/ some defizzed Coke). I checked the NUUN’s site, so it doesn’t have sugar, carbs… Has anyone used it before in a long-distance race (running or a tri)? How do you like (or dislike) it? Thanks.
Anyway, I’ll bring my own drink (Infinite) and gels just in case it doesn’t agree w/ me.
I use it all the time, it is a simple way to carry instant hydration. Just drop it in the cup/bottle and you are good to go. I tried putting a whole tab in my mouth and letting it dissolve that way to. no problems, it makes me burp a bit though. You can get them a any decent tri/running shop. Give it a shot before your race
NUUN won’t get you any calories but will help with the electrolytes. I’ve used it quite a bit with great success, but as with anything it won’t work 100% of the time for 100% of the people.
I just started using it the past month or so and it is great. It’s been pretty hot on our long rides (80+) and I feel much better after and don’t get a sick stomach as I sometimes do with other sports drinks.
I love NUUN. It rocks. You won’t get any calories from it if they provide it “stock” on course, so it’s a bit of a strange choice to me. But if you do gels or bars, the NUUN will take care of your hydration/electrolyte needs very well.
I’ll defer to the guy who doesn’t like “Ace-K” - I don’t know what that is or why it’s bad but I love Nuun. Very very easy on the stomach, great and very easily absorbed mix of electrolytes and a good mild taste.
FYI on what exactly Ace-K is: Acesulfame potassium is a calorie-free artificial sweetener, also known as Acesulfame K or Ace K (K from Kalium, Latin for potassium), and marketed under the trade names Sunett and Sweet One. In the European Union it is also known under the E number (additive code) E950. It was discovered accidentally in 1967 by German chemist Karl Clauss. (source: Wikipedia)
Found in LOTS of diet sodas/drinks. Stable under heat. But with most products approved by the FDA, it has not been studied adequately and maybe cancinogenic.
Personally, when it comes to choosing a good carb, or electrolyte supplement, I prefer the one’s w/out the dyes or artificial sugars.
and BTW - BERROCA from Australia and New Zealand is a MUCH better natural hangover remedy.
Slightly off-topic but I noticed that the second ingredient listed on my Hammer Nutrition HEED powdered drink mix is Xylitol. Anyone know if that is any worse or better than “Ace-K”?
i had NUUN today and only gels for a “hilly as hell and then some hundred” out of Kentucky today (a super frickin hard course). i took in 9 gels, and found myself a little dizzy near the end. obviously, i won’t make this mistake again; I’m out of Infinit!!!
anyway, if you have NUUN for up to a half, i think you’d be fine, but you will need some calories.
and for a half, you should be able to carry your own drink; even if 3 bottles, just take infinit if you’re concerned. it is smarter to practice in race what you already do…
It’s a 50K ‘moonlight’ run :0 I’ll bring my own gels and/or Infinit anyway. In addition to Nuun, they’ll provide the usu. stuff like pretzels, chips, fruits, cliff blocks and coke at each aid station. Gonna be the time for a ‘all you care to eat’ buffet.
i use nuun and hammer gel for all of my racing/training, and have had great results with it. i like infinit but right now it is just too expensive for me to justify.
never had a single issue with nuun and i have found some flavors i like.
the thing i’d be worried about with a run is potential upset stomach.
FWIW, my favorite thing to do with Nuun is drink it outside of working out! in either case, you’re going to have your bases covered. make sure to report on the run though!
