Whats a good tire for an indoor trainer?

Just wondering if Im going to be riding on an trainer all winter, what tire / tyre should I put on my rear wheel. Figured this would make a good christmas present suggestion.

I could just tell them to go to bikesport and ask but they usually prefer me to limit there choices.

thanks

I just save my old tires or use something cheap.

If you don’t have old tires - go with a trainer-specific tire. Continental makes one:

This is probably the perfect application for all those slow, high cr Tufos everyone is getting rid of!

Specialized Armadillo. I had a wheel built-up specially for my trainer bike (cheap one is fine) with an Armadillo on it. I have had this tire on my wheel for 2 years and it’s still in great shape. Doesn’t kick rubber dust or peel. This included a 7-hour ride (indoors!) and lots of Computrainer workouts!

Schwalbe Blizzard Sport (wire bead)

I’m using old ones this winter. I can already see the first one being chewed up nicely.

Get the cheapest one you can find. They wear down much quicker on a trainer so no need to go with anything expensive.

How did you stay on the bike for 7 hours? After 1 1/2 hours I am totally numb, even though I move around, stand, etc.

I was thinking the same thing. 7 hours??? OUCH (said in a very high tone). Not for life nor money could I stay on the trainer for seven hours.

What was the occasion? I can’t even think of a reason to stay on for seven hours.

I used to go through a lot of tires. I ride 4-5000 miles a year inside. I tried cheap, old racers, you name it. I found 2 things, go with one with a high thread count like 120 or higher. Second the press on pressure from the roller is very important to the life of the tire. Apply just enough to avoid slippage, no more. Too much pressure will shred the tire in a hurry. the best I’ve found is the Bont.; I don’t have the exact model, but it is virtually no tread (slick) and has a 127 thread count (tpi=thread per inch). Many companies have gotten away from indicating the thread count on the package, that is for a reason, go with one that does and in the long run you;ll save money.

I assumed you are riding a trainer? this answer is worthless if you are riding rollers…

Conti trainer tires are the best for this application, I agree with the above post.

I’ve had great luck with the Specialized Armadillo as well. The smooth strip down the middle works well on the trainer. It is also a tough as nails tire, so great for training outside and avoiding flats.

How did I do it?

Fizik Vitesse saddle, Tour de France DVDs, and a very Tough Tushy from years and years of bike racing…I was training for IMLP.

I DID allow myself potty breaks (for both me and my dogs) but kept them at 5 mintes. I also do similar workouts where I throw in 20 minutes running on the treadmill every 2 hours.
