Well, we could support whoever wins this election. Or, we could support the person who won the last one and not do what Americans have a nasty habit of doing- If their Happy Meal doesn’t come in 60 seconds they pitch a fit, bithc about McDonalds and go to Burger King.
So many Americans are “voting for change”. Change! Change! Change! Anything is better than this! This war in Iraq is hard, long and boring. Jobs are going away. I may actually have to *work *for a living by thinking and contributing rather than performing mindless, repetitive manufacturing jobs. God forbid! That’s UnAmerican!
Record numbers of Americans are going to the polls today. Young voters. New voters. Most are voters who could not tell you the second largest city in Iraq, the capitol of Afghanistan and what country Usama bin Ladin is from. They are voting on issues they do not understand. They didn’t pay attention in school. They know nothing about history.
All they know is this is hard and they want change.
Problem is this adminisration is dealing with issues that have taken centuries to develop. They won’t be resolved in a four year term, regardless of who the candidate is.

It’s pretty sad to be anti-manufacturing worker.
Before you start the “woe is me manufacturing worker” stuff…I’ll fill you in on my experience.
I’ve worked in manufacturing plants for well over 7 yrs as an engineer.
The line people in many cases made more money than I did. I worked for AT&T, Lucent, and some other companies and those guys and gals pulled in $15-$40/hr…easily…The starting pay was $15 and the benefits rocked.
Unlimited overtime, time and a half for over 40 hrs, and double time on Sundays.
Nothing more than a GED needed either.
Oh, I don’t pity them.

It’s just a pet peeve of mine that people assume offshoring only applies to manufacturing.

That guy doing the lav service on my DC-10 yesterday (Bill) said that it was alright to tell you guys that he made 82 grand last year at the LAX station, counting his overtime worked.
Some may think it’s crazy for us to pay that kind of overtime, but it’s still far cheaper in the long run for us to have a relatively small amount of workers like that making decently big money than to have a whole raft of workers, with their generous benefits packages, working straight or occasional overtime.

In 2000, it was around 51.3%
In 1960, it was 63%
I figure we’ll hit 55% if we’re lucky…which is till pretty darn poor in my book.
I do like you line about support the guy we voted for in 2000. That’s was classic. I wonder if MoveOn.org will have to sell its url to someone else if Kerry wins? Or…to keep with their position, move towards turning over the office in 2008?

Very little hiring and much more laying-off. That’s the way of things until we can sort all this airline turmoil out, unfortunately.
Besides, it takes 5 years, under this current labor contract, for a newly-hired full-timer to reach the top-end of the payscale. Most of 'em come in as part-timers, get eventually upgraded to full-time status, and start at about 9 dollars an hour.
