What would Ali Brownlee consider a pass mark with first attempt at Ironman?

Success… get to the end of the bike leg without 3 flats…
I just happened to speak to a native of the Emerald Isle this very eve. And he was saying how shiiite and rough the roads are around there (and we’re familiar with bad roads in England !!)

I am not sure AB will race Cork if he does well in Leeds… for me it is a nonsense, considering he is trying to give Tokyo a try… moreover the olympic test event is just there…and we are not in the age of Mark Allen. It is not possible to success in ITU and Kona at the same time.
Oh, I just saw again posts against Gomez… does anybody remember he is multichampion…70.3,itu,xterra??? Just focus on your guys getting injured and we are all happy

Not necessarily having a go at Gomez. He’s an awesome athlete. But someone mentioned him as a threat to AB. I don’t see him as a threat in long course and I used the fact I’d seen him drafting as one of the reasons why. Frodeno and Brownlee did the lion’s share of the work in South Africa, Gomez and co sat at the back having an easy ride and still couldn’t match those guys on the run. Similarly in Cairns and Kona. Lange did the same thing in Kona 2018. Arguably smart tactics? He hit the run fresh. That’s something AB will have to deal with strategically. He will want to be at the front, pushing aggressively. If he can work with someone like Wurf, on the bike, hit T2 with him then he can win. He would, potentially, have 10mins+ on Lange. But I don’t know if he can keep up with Wurf?

Forgetting Kona/IM for a second I do hope we get another duel for 70.3 WC half in Nice. That is a course with real history. I would be great to see AB, Jan and Gomez turn up fit, prepared and injury free.

70.3 is where the racing is at. Ironman is just dumb.

I’d much prefer Ironman remove all prize money from Ironmans and just move it all to 70.3 events.

Watching an Ironman is about as exciting as watching nascar without the crashes.

The millions of Motosport Fans would disagree with you. The money is all in long course racing.

I actually think when/if IM races can put actual full on athletes in the race, the race dynamics are interesting enough to keep me invested. But that happens 2 times a year at best. Every other IM has 2 A guys and then a bunch of B’s.

But you put 20 championship level athletes together, and 112mi can “fly” by on their broadcasts to me.

Even in Kona, I come and go on the marathon on their telecast. I can watch 85% of the bike, but the run to me is too boring that I come and go way to often. I’ll scroll to the “pro updates” to see where they are.

Can you share a link to that drafting that your saw? I have seen a lot of accusations an zero evidence as yet.

There is however abundant evidence of AB & JB drafting each other at Abu Dhabi, and AB Moto drafting at I believe Slovakia and yet no one is labelling then as drafters.

All of them are awesome athletes, with their unique traits. Let’s enjoy them while they last, which won’t be long unfortunately.

Pretty sure Alistair wouldn’t have any issues keeping up with Wurf, he has said his ftp is around 400, which is 5,7w/kg and maybe just slightly under Wurf.
I would say Ali’s best possible tactics at Kona would be swimming with Burgs, then going decently hard on he bike till Wurf catches on and then take turns in front and get to T2 with a 10+ min lead (which I doubt he will even need).

If he could finish in front of Gomez.

I think there is a very good chance that he will finish in front of Gomez in Cork.

I think quite the opposite is true.

If Gomez can get away with drafting like he’s done the last few IM and 70.3s he’s done then possibly. But he’s well overdue a drafting penalty.

While you find footage of your personal opinion, check out what Currie said about Gomez after Challenge Wanaka 2018. But hey, everyone is entitled to criticize athletes that been competing for over 10 years on broadcast events.

Then check out what a training partner of the Brownlees did intentionally in 2011 to stop Javier Gomez. But hey again, everyone is entitled to criticize athletes that been competing for over 10 years on broadcast events.

That is quite a jump from defending Javier to saying that the Brownlees asked Harry to swim into Javier!

agree with this, and with brook’s comment above too.

i wonder if the boredom might be fatal for ali’s IM ambitions. he really loves the cut and thrust of racing, and that’s not what IM is about. even the once or twice a year that you get a truly stacked field, there’s long stretches of nothing and the action unfolds at a (relatively) glacial pace.

I didn’t say Brownlees asked him to do it. I respect a lot both Ali and Jonathan. But it’s a fact that a training partner of them was involved in one of the most obvious unsportsmanlike behaviors of triathlon history

I’m not criticising Gomez. He’s an awesome athlete. The point I’m trying to make is that AB is a superior athlete at long course and I base that on the fact that in the 2 races I raced (Cairns and SA) he had to draft to keep up. No point going on about Gomez as there are plenty of athletes in the same boat including Lange. There’s no point producing footage as “proof”, we all know most of the pros push the envelope when it comes to drafting.

Go watch AB at the challenge championships a few years back. He’s all over the road trying to get the draft from the lead moto, I don’t think AB is “clean” and Gomez is “dirty” in respect to drafting issues.

IMO Ali Brownlee is thinking of winning the Ireland IM.

There are all kinds of downsides from not winning. Who finished in front of him and behind him? Winning takes care of all of that.

He could have picked a more competitive IM and perhaps at a better time of the year for other reasons. Don’t think he picked Ireland unless he could win it. He hasn’t declared it to be for training purposes. Yet, that’s still an option or a DNS. He’s a pretty aggressive triathlete when it comes to goal setting and performance.

Qui prodest? Why would a professional triathlete ruin his own race? He didn’t just slowed JG, he slowed himself. Somebody from his own team was benefited from that action. It is up to you to draw your own conclusions.

He eventually also ruined his own career, but I guess he never thought it would all be done filmed.

Given Ali’s history since Rio I think just turning up to this race without an injury after doing Leeds ITU would be a massive achievement.

On that note its bewildering why Ali who only just seems to have got himself fit in years seems to be dipping his toe in both short and long, I’m guessing if he wins Leeds as convincingly as he’s done in the past he might not bother with this race.

Completely agree with that. However he might turn up and job around? There is probably a large paycheck even if he doesn’t finish but runs only 10-20k?

I guess that is why Currie was so upset about that race:
https://triathlonmagazine.ca/...ss-challenge-wanaka/ because JG was drafting him…

Will he get an appearance fee? I’ve no idea on that, I’m guessing not from IM, from sponsors maybe?

Sure someone on here could answer that.

I agree. My mate who turned pro last year (not in same league as AB, more like a v fast AGer) raced Luizhou 70.3 last year with AB and said he sat behind the lead moto for most of the race.

I was never insinuating that AB is clean and Gomez is dirty. These guys are all highly competitive animals and will do what they have to, to win. They are going to push the envelope with drafting, if they are not going to get pinged for sitting 5m behind the guy in front, then they’ll remain there.I don’t think there are any pros that are going to take the moral high ground and rigidly stick to 12m.
