What to look for in a hrm

i am looking to buy a hrm to use in my training. Not much into computers/technology, but i’m looking for something that will have all the features i need. any suggestions

Bob

I think average heart rate is a key feature.

By far, the most important thing to look for is a good return policy at the store where you bought it - I had to take two of them back in the past because they did not perform as advertised.

If you want something simple and reliable, buy a Timex Marathon from Walmart - less than $60, and they are very good. Walmart had a killer return policy, too.

I bought a Polar s520 primarily for the cycling functions and it sucks! Big waste of money. I think I’d be better off with a dedicated wireless cyclometer and a relatively cheap, entry level HRM that gives you avg. heart rate, and allows you to set your limits for your particular training zone for the day. Simple is better.

i use a HRM to tell me my HRM, funny eh? thats is, just my current HR, that’s all I need. this is for my race bike, for training I’ll be using a powertap pro with all the bells/whistles.

so for racing I use a Polar a1, because it displays my HR and has big numbers so I can see them easier when i’m riding hard:

For cycling I agree with QuintanaRooster and TimeTrial - get something simple and use a cheap computer. For running and other activities I like HR displayed with chrono or time - and the time format MUST diplay seconds.

… I agree… then, I started using the Timex BodyLink system and found it much more useful. However, you will be disappointed with the HRM’s functions (can’t wait for a Timex upgrade)… the Timex HRM doesn’t provide as much information as the Polar 520/510 (but waaay more dependable).
