I’m not a Kona person, I do just the bike thing but love my HED stuff.
That’s baller and outside the box. Great to see! Bumping the topic for that!
Should we expect to see some of the sponsored pro’s sporting these at Kona this year?
Edit: Check out Dan’s front page article. We should expect to see athletes on these wheels.
Wonder if we’ll see Lionel on it? With his poor bike handling I assume he’ll pass even though he’s HED sponsored.
That’s awesome. Now lets get a front one as well for flat courses without wind…

As someone who has ridden down from Hawi several times on it’s day when you certainly don’t want a race down there it would be carnage for many not only Lionel I would suspect. I have never shit myself like any other piece of road or conditions than like Hawi on it’s day. The worst day I’ve experienced I think a week out from the race in 2017 my friends sister a seasoned rider was blown off her bike twice in training. I think 2014 was my worst Kona race conditions not as bad as that day where I just committed and thought well it’s race so hoped for the best but I know there was reports of several women being lighter that got blown off their bike. I would guarantee with a wheel like that I most likely would have gone down or been pushed across the road when you are hit by the gusts and taken someone else out. I love Hed products and did all my racing there on Hed wheels but as sexy and alluring as that wheel is it would be a firm no from me. I value my life more…
Blackwell Research had a prototype like this at inter bike one year. Too bad it never made it far.
A professional will take a product and test it under expected race conditions. I trust HED did their homework on this and I hope to see Lionel rocking it.
You don’t need any handling skills to make a back wheel work for you, it’s pure physics. Lionel’s 165 pounds should be just fine for this wheel.
Have you ridden down Hawi on it’s worst days I’m guessing not? It is the gusts that hit you and are worst with tri spokes and disks and I have no doubt you can stay upright but you will be shooting left across the road with this wheel. Hawi as I say is a unique place with strong gusts hitting you at unique angles as the wind comes from below kind of lifting you and across so unless you are there on the day you’ll be searching for places to replicate it.
Don’t get mine wrong with the cross tailwind on the return especially on one of those days I hope he would be using it and running a pro peloton size chain ring for the return as the speeds would be hectic!
I went looking for pics of that as soon as I saw this. Blackwell 200, none of this piddly 180mm nonsense.
Zipp did the 1080 thing quite a few years ago although the HED takes the rim deeper

Funny thing, according to a few well known aerodynamicists, as long as your front wheel is within reasonable limits, a rear disc actually helps stabilize a bike in stronger winds.

I don’t think stability is the issue coming down from Hawi… it is simply not getting blown off the road. Give the wind a big enough sail and it will do its thing. You will be stable… you will just be headed into the lava and brush.

Yup. No idea why this urban myth (discs not liking wind) is still being perpetuated. Bizarre they are still banned in Kona.
Per weatherunderground day of the UCI elite TT had avg wind of 20 to 25mph on site. One hour during the TT had 30.
Rear discs everywhere……
Looks cool!
But the critical question, what’s the price?
