What type of running shorts are the ST faithful running in? I’m in the market for some new ones and typically I just get whatever is on sale at the Nike Outlet. I’m considering finding some new options. Has anybody tried Roka’s new shorts? I recall reading Desoto split shorts were “sublime” but I was afraid they were a bit short.
I have run in a bunch over the years, but my favorite so far have been Brooks Sherpa 5" shorts. You can usually find them somewhat on sale for $35-$40, depending on what size you need. I’ve looked at Roka, but just can’t bring myself to spend that kind of money on a pair of shorts.
My two current favorites are:
New Balance Impact 3"
Zoot PCH 3"
I also have an old pair of Patagonia shorts that I love. I think they are Striders but I’m pretty sure they don’t make them in this length anymore (maybe 4"?).
Any short, split leg of not, short shorts. I can’t figure out for the life of me why so many of you are running around in those long, baggy things.

Because if you aren’t really a “fast” runner, then you just look like a goober in nut huggers.
I have the Desoto running shorts (longer ones), they are fine. But they compare to my Nike shorts and my UnderArmour shorts. I haven’t found any “super great” shorts. Or maybe my 8min/mile pace just doesn’t make a difference in what shorts I wear.

Do you ever look at all the other things we wear? Really think it’s only your running shorts that make you look like a ‘‘goober’’?

I agree … I tend to lean towards shorter ones but where do we draw the line? 5" to me seems to be ideal but everybody will have their own preference. I tend to run for 60 minutes or under so my main concern is airflow and having a liner built into the short that doesn’t bunch up or chafe. I keep nutrition or keys, phone etc in a FlipBelt so pockets and the likes are a nuisance to me.

This is my feeble attempt to limit said goober qualities.

Well said!
“Time to Run” from amazon. $15/pair and they are by far the most durable shorts I’ve ever worn. They feel so much better than any brooks/nike/boa shorts I have.
I have the new Roka 5 inch shorts. I love them. They are better than my old Mizuno shorts. The run shirts are awesome too.
Unless it’s really cold, then I’m a fan of classic split shorts. Around a 2-3" inseam is where I like them.
I have several pairs of Puma TB split shorts that are always top of the pile. I have some other pairs that are fine, some Nike and something else (I only really remember what the Puma shorts are because they’re the best).
Another pair of running shorts I’m passionate about is the Soffe men’s running shorts: They are the worst running shorts I have ever had the misfortune of spending money on. I think my Puma shorts are sadly discontinued, but any split short from a major athletics brand will probably be good. I like to make sure they have a little key pocket on the inside of the waistband; most do, but some don’t. Avoid Soffe.
Couldn t care less…any short shorts I can find in any outlet store from any well know brand…

Will second the Brooks Sherpa 5". Just long/short enough for a daily driver and they’re priced right if you get them out of season. My only gripe with them is they seem to get sweat logged really easily.
My nut huggers are a few sets of Soffee’s - they’re okay for when it’s ridiculously hot out and they’re cheap enough at 10 bucks, I just wish they had a waist tie in them. The light colors don’t leave much to the imagination once they sweat out, though.
Have a set of Lululemon Surge 3" and Surge 5" and love them both.
Another Brooks Sherpa vote. I might give the Roka ones a try here soon though.
I run a lot in the Mizuno Rider 5.5 (which, from what I can gather, is much shorter than other options) and the Oiselle Distance shorts (yes, shut up, I know they are a “women’s” line, they fit well). Ran an ultra team for a relay last year in the Distance shorts and never had an issue.
I have a pair of adidas response shorts that are around the 5-6 inch range that are amazing…not sure if you can get them anymore though. Just bought a pair of mizuno and they don’t compare at all
Patagonia Pro Strider 5"
.
Lululemon Surge 5". I think they discontinued them though and only do a 3" or 7".
