That one certainly is priced right, but I think it may be too squishy for riding a trainer. Let me know how it works, Im definitely interested!
Squishy is good - it’ll add to comfort on the bike.
I use a big beach towel, but elevate my front wheel with a 3 or 4-inch balance bad that allows quite a bit of movement, and have the trainer itself on a folded yoga mat that allows a tiny bit of squish. This is a good thing.
I use a remnant from a new carpet installation. Trimmed the edges so it’s not frayed. Matches the carpet but keeps sweat and fluids off the good carpet underneath.
An old leftover swath of carpet. Along with 2 phone books for the front wheel riser. It’s hardcore in my pain cave. Rocky style. Well, except for the 52 inch plasma.
No mat here. I use a couple of big towels that are washed and rotated after each ride. Something nasty to me about those mats that just accumulate sweat and never really get washed.
I’ve found that the mats you can purchase from the bike trainer manufacturers are way too soft / squishy and I’d assume there’d be long term durability issues as my trainer put solid dents in the mat immediately.
I purchased this mat and it has been great. Super solid and you are able to cut it to exact size with a box cutter (take your time here). You can get 2 solid sized trainer mats out of one 4 x 15’ roll.
Yeah, a bit pricier than the ones available from cycleops, etc but this will last forever.
I use a beach towel for most training rides. It depends what surface is under the mat, if you have tile or wood floors the towel can move under the front wheel but that is only if you put some effort into it. If you have carpet it would be better not to use a beach towel because of the moisture. I use to have a training mat that my wife bought me from Cyclops but it was worn and I didn’t want to buy another one.
I use that exact Harbor Freight mat. Works perfectly fine. Little narrow, so I’ve gotten a drop or two of sweat on the wood floors before, but for the most part, it can’t be beat at 10 bucks. And the sweat in the floor is rare and cleans up easy unlike the pudales on the mat that would ruin the floor. Fits my trainer width perfectly.
I went to my local big box hardware store where they sell plastic matting by the foot. It is clear and has little plastic anti slip nubs on the bottom side and can used to cover carpet in high traffic areas. I got six feet of that and it works great under my bike.
The best is to go to a farm type store or a rubber mat type place that sells rubber rolls for mats in various thickness and get a nice one the actual size and thickness you want. Not much more than the c3/8’ thin crap sad ones sold by Costco, Hate Fargo or big box stores. We picked up a nice thick 1/2" one for around $50. It’s on top of some nice carpeting in a family room.
This works perfectly and is inexpensive. I have wood floors and the mat is large enough to allow you to put on your shoes without standing on the wood floors (scratching them). They sell a smaller version as well, which is not as thick…put that version under my treadmill.
