Do I want just want a mountain bike shoe or is there something more specific? I’m not asking for models just what features I should be looking for.
Thanks.
toe spikes are nice if you race course with slippery run-ups.

Any good fitting MTB shoe will work. Toe spikes are good, good cleats on the bottom are good as well. A well recessed cleat is good because of possible sand/mud build up too.
I raced the last two years on 35 dollar 661 mtb shoes with SPD pedals. Im UCI cat 1 international elite or whatever.

Thanks for the help. It’s good to know I don’t need some exotic (expensive) specialized shoe.
- 3 on toe spike/cleats
I have used the spikes that came with, no spikes and screw in soccer cleats with my Sidi Bullets.
I think a slightly more flexy sole is better than a super rigid carbon type sole.

I’m another for toe spikes and non carbon soles. Carbon soles are just too stiff for running, I found my feet would hurt and heels would keep lifting out since the sole wasn’t flexing.

Not at all. Actually, I use the cheapest shoe in the Sidi line (now discontinued! DOH!), the Rampa 3 carried over from XTERRA. The Rampa has the same type of velcro enclosure as a tri shoe, but with a MTB sole. The coolest thing about them was that until Sidi came out with the SRS sytem, I believe the Rampa had the same sole as the top of the line Sidi at about 1/3 the price.
I’ve been in my Rampa’s for 2 years now and they don’t show a lick of wear. I’m actually trying to hunt down another pair just in case the worst were to happen and I lost mine!
