I have realized that I’ve never greased my speedplays - and been using them for 3 years now. Which grease brand do you use? I have some of that Marine boat trailer grease that I use around the house… Will that work?
I would use Phil Wood because that’s what I have.
I also use a marine grade bearing grease.
Mobil 1 synthetic grease. The red stuff. Same stuff I use on my car and truck.
+1 marine grease, which is what came with the grease gun I bought.
Super Lube synthetic, it’s what came with my gun. When I needed a refill I found a deal on Amazon, 2 tubes for the price of one. I shouldn’t need grease until I retire now.
Speedplay says that a high-quality, waterproof grease will work. You can take a look at Greasing Speedplays without the expensive gun thread for a good discussion on the subject.
I just bought their expensive gun grease. It lasts years so when it finally runs out, I’ll probably buy it again
Had my Speedplay pedals since 1993 or 94. NEVER greased. Bought the grease gun last year but I don’t know how to use it. So I just figured that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. We will see how far they go.

GT85.
If I recall correctly it “should” be a PTFE lube.
I think I use Finish Line.
I don’t have a grease gun, so I just remove the pedal from the spindle, pack the pedal full of grease and some more on the spindle, then re-attach.
Because I swap time between two sets, and rarely ride in rain, I only grease every 2-3 years, but my original set I went 6 years without greasing.
I use the marine grease as well.
Phils and apply with plastic syringe. Fits very nicely right into the grease port.

So you don’t ride much in the rain?

I believe that I have viewed that before can’t pull it up right now. The problem is that I can’t get the dustcaps(I think that is what they are called) off. The newer pedals have a little screw on the end. Mine do not.
No. No I don’t often ride in the rain. But over the years, it has certainly rained on me plenty of times.

I wouldn’t recommend using a water repellent as a lubricant for bearings which are under high load and low rpm?
IF you are stripping and flushing then re-applying grease afterwards then sure, GT-85 and WD-40 are useful for cleaning off old crap…
ALSO IF these pedals were to be used expressly for track OR racing (where post event maintenance was carried out religiously) then sure using a light oil for reduced friction could be suggested but the gains are so small its likely not worth the reduced protection… arguably the bearing load may be sufficient to cause bearing gauling on its races and actually increase friction… . but i imagine its too hard to know… until its too late and the races and bearings re pitted / scored…
I use some Park Tools grease just because that’s what I have around.
