I have a 20 year old waterbed. I love it but it is starting not to love me. I have made this bed work through 2 hip replacements and a shoulder reconstruction. But now, with my back being very temperamental, i think i need a new system. I am a stomach and side sleeper.

Are waterbeds meant to have fair support? Seems like an air mattress and I’ve never found those to be comfortable.
Mines is older than yours and not that great. Pillows even worse.

I’ve been debating starting this thread for a few weeks now also. We desperately need a new mattress and can’t wrap my head around the mattress buying process.
Laying down on a mattress in the middle of the store, middle of the day, in jeans and shoes…and a backwards hat. Just doesn’t replicate the bedtime process for me to get accurate comfort data.
Interested to see what others say.

We have a Kingsdown king sized something-or-other… I’m fairly certain it’s this bed
It’s firm but has a pillow top so feels plush but also supportive.
When we were shopping around I desperately wanted to get the same mattress they have at Fairmont gold hotels. Every time I lay down on one, I fall asleep like I’ve been drugged. But, I hear they don’t last very long and hotels tend to replace them frequently so I have up on that idea. But, if you were wondering…
I have a latex mattress. Expensive and really damn heavy but super comfortable.

I love my waterbed. I have so many pillows to support my sagging spine as it dips with the heaviest part of the body of course. I also struggle at times to move in it. Cant imagine being 80 doing this!
King size Tempur-Pedic.
Very happy with that choice, and I think a quality memory foam mattress is a good choice for shoulder/back/hip issues.
Go to Costco and buy a mattress.
Or just call the number on the road signs that advertise “queen mattress 199$”?

We have one of those king size beds that arrives in a box, with a 1-2" dense latex topper. Wonderful.
You weren’t concerned about not trying it out? Does it have a “trial period”?
There was a trial period - maybe like 100 nights . . . get money back easy. Problem with these trial periods is how to get rid of the mattress, no place will take them (here in Madison WI)
Spring mattress, beyond the king size, like king plus or something like that? Huge for a single divorced guy like me but its what I got here. Moving late this year will get a queen memory foam like I used to have.
I’m also on a spring mattress, and have been for most of my life. I have a good pillow top queen that works nicely. The whole setup was less than $500.
It’s great to hear that waterbeds are still a thing. I had one for several years and enjoyed it. I loved getting into a warm waterbed.
Just looked at those in person. Loved them with the adjustable base! Looked at Helux and Puffy- love that name!
Casper mattress from Costco on a Crate & Barrell bed. Could not tell the difference between the $900 Casper and the 4-5 times as costly name brand job at the mattress store.
Game changer for us is fancy sheets, good pillows and the piece de resistance… a cooling mattress topper pad. Temp regulation is the key. My wife and I each have a control unit so we can dial in the temp we want between the 50s and 120°.
Well, just looked at a hybrid with adjustable base. Coming home in 2 weeks. I have bever spoiled myself like this before!
In Canada, we got a mattress in a box….i must have been sleeping on terrible beds my whole life because I am insanely impressed:

We’ve been looking at new hybrids for the last few months and haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I’ve settled on a Boring mattress on our existing slatted frame though. Super highly reviewed.
Reply in general. Anyone know anything about Saatva mattresses? They seem to get good ratings. And hybrid memory foam and springs.
