What is your favorite pre-workout?

I have been on this Alpha Lion lately and really like it. I don’t get the jitters or anything. What is your favorite?

Jk of course, but does that pre-workout actually help your #’s (power) or does it help get mentally in the zone/excited to train?

My power numbers are sh!t right now - it definitely puts me in the zone and motivated to train.

Honestly I ride easy for 20 min, do a few spin ups in the next 5 min and then I’m normally good to go.

For the run I’ll run about a mile, then over the next half mile I’ll do 3 or 4 strides then I’m normally good.

For the swim I’ll do a 10X100 set on 15 to 20 sec rest, normally start slow and as I feel better I get quicker. I’ll then know I’m ready for my workout.

Edit: It’s obvious that I don’t know what pre-workout is.

If you’re ever going to compete in any events that might have a dope test, you kinda have to be nuts to take a supplement like this that isn’t independently certified free from doping products.

Heck, the first reseller (aside from Amazon) that came up when I googled this product even has an explicit warning on their page:

Wow indeed. And the risk of contamination isn’t exactly a small one. Recent studies put the incidence of contamination with substances that could trigger a positive test at around 28%.

Interesting - luckily I’m not racing anytime soon.

18 months or so should take you out of the detection range for some of the longer-lived anabolic substances that are found floating around out there, so if that’s what you mean by “not anytime soon” I suppose that’s a reasonable wager to make.

Of course, one might also want to think about how comfortable they feel ingesting a category of product with such an incredibly high likelihood of having, well, just about anything in it. There are certified clean supplements available, and I honestly can’t imagine why anyone who wants to use products in this category doesn’t automatically purchase one of those.

Except, of course, for the fact that they may well not work as “well” as the non-certified ones.
The answer as to why that is often the case should be pretty obvious.

Good points.

300mg of caffeine? Jesus!!! I have a pre-workout that I sometimes use that has 130mg of caffeine and it gives me the jitters and just revs me up. I can’t imagine what 300mg would do to me.

I’ve taken preworkout before when I was lifting. It was scary. I couldn’t imagine taking it before an endurance event. My kid is national qualifier in weightlifting and I told him to stay away from any preworkout. The potential of it containing a banned substance is real but aside from that, it can be insanely dangerous.

Are you talking about cardio?

I used to take pre-workouts when I was primarily lifting weight and going heavy. This was in the late 2000’s US and I remember stuff getting banned or formulas changing as ingredients were found to be dangerous or illegal. I wouldn’t take anything not approved in Europe anymore, purely due to the fact that they have much stricter product testing compared to the US, where supplements are essentially untested and borderline unregulated. Goes triple for anything unbranded (Amazon/Ali).

Over time I settled on Japanese green tea, beta alanine, and creatine. Sticking to western-produced Carnosyn and Creapure to make sure it’s actually clean (in terms of unhealthy contaminants).

I would never take any pre-workout for cardio in training, but I admit I’ve had Red Bull in some race aid stations.

My favourite for the gym at the moment is from PHD Nutrition (UK based)

If anything I actually like the flavour!

If you’re not racing, are you training to be in ‘race shape’ or for general fitness? If it’s the latter, why would you bother spending $$$ on ‘pre workout’ vs just letting your general diet take care of your needs? Frankly, why would you bother with ‘pre workout’ even if you are prepping for races?

I’ve always used a pre-workout for the past 15 years or so. I started out with NO Xplode, then was on Nitraflex for a while, and now am trying some new ones. It is a good igniter for me - I really like it. I’m currently out of shape and am cutting 57lbs in 6.5 months.
