What is your clothing choice for sprint triathlons in 10°C (50°F) weather?

Your comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

Sergio

My last tri was in weather about like that. Just wore my regular tri race gear – Zoot tri jersey and Zoot tri shorts. Yeah, I was chilly during the early going of the bike leg, but it was a hilly race, so I warmed up fast.

I always wear tights below about 65 F, might be a little warm but rather that then getting my joints cold, especially the knees. As for the top I would go with a short sleeve top and arm warmers to start and then lose the arm warmers if necessary.

Do a search on the Harriman Tri last year - it was that cold plus raining. Out of the water, I took the time to put a long sleeve shirt and cycling jacket on, plus long fingered gloves. I wished I had leg warmers and booties. I could not feel my feet by the time I was running. Some people ended up with hypothermia.

Two tri tops and your usual bottoms. A little cold to start but I warm up later on in the bike. Avoid the caffeine beforehand and take it during if you have to.

My last race in September had a race start temp of 42…I wear only a bathing suit. Last year my last race had slightly warmer temps, but pouring cold rain and I wore race top and briefs…adrenaline is an amazing thing!

Standard tri top and bottoms…it’s cold as hell, but it’s just a sprint so HTFU for me I guess! I have left my swim cap on before to keep heat in…

When I lived in Bermuda, I used to think that anything below 20C was cold. Since I moved to Canada, that is pretty much par for the course.

If the swim is wetsuit legal, wear a vest under the wetsuit. No additional time in T1, and Jr will stay a bit warmer on the bike.

arm warmers or long sleeve top, knee warmers toe covers on shoes.

the same as if it was 18c.

This september in Massachusetts a 8AM start came with a 45 degree temperature. Everyone who was racing for an award seemed to be dressed no different than if the temp was 80. I wore my tri top and tri shorts and remember not being cold (but it was a sprint). I do remember my feet being totally number during the entire 5k and my wifes were not cold at all but she wore her toe warmers and I didnt on the bike.

Normal tri. gear unless its howling wind or driving rain. If the water is 50 degrees I would probably sign up for the duathlon.

Screw that. Don`t start. Find a nice warm pub and drink beer.

swimsuit. I really like my swimsuit.

swimsuit:me :: magic slippers:cinderella

or something like that.

speedo, and nothing else, you’ll be cold the first 5 minutes of the bike and you’ll be sweating by the end. I’ve raced 4 sprints in 45-55 degrees. Speedo every time.

sounds like the best plan
.

I am impressed at some of you racing in such clothing in cold weather. We live in the tropics and are not adapted at all to those temperatures.

Best wishes and thanks to all,

Sergio

That’s warm enough (IF it’s dry; 50 and rain is a whole ‘nuther kettle o’ fish) for normal tri wear:
tri shorts, top, maybe full finger gloves vs. regular ones on the bike.

You could have armwarmers and a light wind vest on hand if need be, but I don’t think you’d need 'em.
A sprint is over in less than an hour or so, and with the intensity you’ll warm up, eventually.

50 and raining - wear whatever it takes to keep you warm and dry-ish.

shorty john wetsuit?
Speed suit?
Plastic bag?
