What is the Hill Repeat equivalent in swimming?

If Hill Repeats are a workout that make you stronger on the bike and run, what’s the equivalent workout for the swim?

Butterfly.

400s IM.

Paddles
.

Niagra Falls
.

Mud.

bucket swims? (dragging a 5gallon pal on a rope)
tandem bungie swimming? (like tug of war, with a bungie cord)

Why worry about it? The swim is guaranteed to be flat…

Current
.

Lungbusters.

Typical set is 3x200

within each 200, you breathe progressively less.

1st 50 - breathe every 3 strokes
2nd 50 - breathe every 5 strokes
3rd 50 - breathe every 7 strokes
4th 50 - breathe every 9 strokes

30 second rest between each 200.

That’s a completely stupid and dangerous way to train. You might want to read up on shallow water blackout! Several people have died doing this. Just saying…

Caramel.

What exactly is this suppose to do for a swimmer?

we do similar sets all the time. Where can I read up on people who have died doing this?

This thing called the internet.

right. I googled it and nothing came up. So they must not have happened. If you can tell me where on the web I can find specific incidents then I’ll believe they happened. But since my interweb search came up with nothing, I don’t believe you

Swim up a fish ladder.

If it never happens, there would not be a term for it.

I learned about this at NTC here in Florida doing similar training.

Pulled straight from the web…Might want to get a new web browser as yours is defective!!

Basically when you start holdong your breath underwater during exertion, you will blackout without ANY warning signs. And yes, a 4th set breathing every 9 strokes is holding your breath. Not advised and why we never went past 5!

Not really. I’ve been swimming for 14 years and have been coaching for the past five years have never had a problem with a set like that. It helps teach breath control, something that a ton of novice swimmers lack, and helps your body cope better with large build ups of CO2. With that being said though, one generally wants to slow down their pace when doing such a set and while it may feel like climbing a hill on your lungs, the slowed pace doesn’t necessarily build up your muscles in the same way a hill would.

I would imagine pyramids maintaining a constant or progressively faster pace would be more akin to a hill repeat.

Sprinters: rack and cords in water, and weights out of water
Distance: 70,000yds-90,000 a week quality work
.

LARGE build ups of CO2 are the cause of shallow water blackout.
