What is the fastest sprint triathlon time?

I’m curious…mainly bored. I know everyone races olympic/international, half, and full iron here at ST, but does anybody actually focus on sprints? I’m curious as to what the fastest time has been for a standard sprint triathlon–500-700m swim, ~20km bike, 5km run. oh…both drafting and non-drafting.

Google is your friend

I don’t think you’ll get a definite answer because there is no standard distance (i.e., it is not always exactly half of an olympic race).

That being said I did a sprint race (500m - 20k - 5k) where the winner was just under an hour.

there is no standard size, so the fastest one will probably be the shortest one
.

standard sprint triathlon
No such creature.

Winning time at ASU super sprint (300m/6.6/1.4): 33:12

I have no idea as to exact time but I remember Simon Lessing and Brad Beven putting down some pretty quick times in the early- mid 90’s. Australia used to have(may still do) a sprint type series ,Toohey’s Blue??, in the 90’s where they were going pretty quick.
Macca may have even raced it if I remember correctly.

– this is a 100y S / 2.5 ml B / 1.2ml R but technically a “sprint tri”.

Emeryville

* * * * * Results by ON YOUR MARK * * * * * 3RD ANNUAL SHORTEST TRIATHLON EVER - EMERYVILLE, CA - APRIL 18, 2009 Top Male 1. Hanns Detlefsen, Dublin, CA 36 0:22:51 Top Female 1. Eve Archer, Berkeley, CA 23 0:30:29 Top Male Master 1. Marin Rodriguez, Oakland, CA 44 0:25:58 Top Female Master 1. Pauline Overbay, Santa Rosa, CA 40 0:35:47

Was that up a mountain? Those times seem awful. The winning male at 22:51?

Swim 100y: 1:30 would be slow
Bike 2.5m: 7:15 would be under 25mph for 2.5 m, which shouldn’t be hard to do
Run 1.2m: 7:12 would be a 6 min mile

Those would all be pretty unspectacular stats and would add up to less than 16 minutes. I’m not trying to take a shot at Hanns Drlefsen, but that’s either a ridiculously tough course or a ridiculously non-competitive field.

Yeah, no such thing as a standard sprint, but the most common seems to be 300y/20k/5k. There are a lot of those in my area. Basically the maximum length of every lane of most pools, then half of an Olympic distance bike and run.

I posted a low 54’ time a few weeks ago which won one such small race. The fastest I’ve seen in my area is 52 minutes. If the course were fast enough and conditions ideal, I think there are a number of guys in my state that might go 50 or 51. I would imagine the upper limit might be somewhere around 46 or 47 minutes. 3’/26’/15’ and 2’ for transitions. Of course, most courses are not even close to exact on distance. I’ve seem some 20k bikes that were maybe 17k and 5k runs than were way short too. So it would be hard to compare one race to another.

30mph on the bike and a 15 min 5k to follow it? AND a 1:00/100 swim pace? Hrm. I would hope that someone that can go that fast in all 3 could manage faster than 2’ in transitions.

I would expect 4’/30’/17, maybe 18’ to be more realistic, and not many will even get that.

John

They are having what they call a “UBERMAN” the day b4 the N.J. State Tri. Think its like a 250 meter swim 5 mile bike and 1 mile run. They only opened it up for a few elites I believe. That should be fast!

I said “upper limit” as in “the fastest ANYONE could go”. 26 on a 20k is more like 28-29 mph. The 2’ for transition does take in some rounding. Most of the races require about that much just due to the sheer distance between the end of 1 part to the start of the next.
