What is Peak Power Output (PPO)?

I’m looking at defining some periodized zones for cycling and just read a study that based power zones from Peak Power Output (PPO). The study did not mention what PPO is (or where it came from). Any thoughts or ideas about where PPO is derived?

There is no universal definition for that.
Might be a bad idea to base zones on a study that didn’t make that clear?

They may be referring to using the peak power performed in the vo2max testing protocol, as described in here:

Why do you not like Coggan zones and a 20 or 30’ test?.. you some sort of communist? I’m reporting you!

I just hadn’t heard of PPO before, and I can’t imagine basing any training zones from my 1100+ watts recorded from a sprint finish road race.

Looking at the percentages used to define zones, they are very similar to what was discussed here a little while back when using heart rate to establish zones. I guess I’m trying to figure what power assessment is best to base polarized training zones from (thinking of a 3-zone training model) when using watts to guide cycling training.

Most of those polarized training guys are using heart rate data, not power.

What method of power testing you use to establish zones is kind of besides the point, it is a fundamentally different metric to use for zones. Say, FTP is 280, 225 watts for 3 hours will start at a low zone heart rate but end in a high one

while these guys might be targeting a low heart rate all day, so power and heart rate zone distribution will differ

Seems that it would make sense to use HR when shooting for Zone 1 riding and power when hitting Zone 3 in a 3 zone model then. I did this for mararthon training, HR for easy and pace for harder stuff.

Maybe, I’m not sure anyone knows for sure.
Or it may not matter!
