What happened to the Zipp 1080?

Zipp came out with the 1080s a couple of years a go to great fan fare. They are no longer being made (or at least on the Zipp web site). What happened? Tim

The new 808 Firecrest had better aero numbers, so they discontinued the 1080.

Firecrest rims.

Can’t make one for 1080, b/c it would be too wide. 808 FC is as fast as a 1080.

I think they still make the rim, according to their catalog. But you can only make so many product and with them pushing the FC line the 1080 really doesn’t have place.

Ok, so when they come out with the Cervelo P5 I know to put FC808s on them. Thanks, Tim

They could, look at the measurements for the 303 to 404 to 808. They don’t get appreciably wider as they get longer, but at some point there is diminishing returns. If anything the 303 is the most successful of them all. According to Zipps catalog its is only 1 watt slower than the 404FC.

You really never saw many 1080s on the road compared to discs and 808s. I wouldn’t be surprised if the just learned from that.

There you go again taking liberty with facts.

Ummm…yeah…I wouldn’t put much stock in that 1W number based on some plots shown recently on WeightWeenies. But, I know you’re well aware of that, so I’m a bit confused as why you’re ignoring that info.

IME, the biggest problem with the 1080 was handling. I have no problems with my old narrow Jet 90 in even gusty conditions, but my experience with a 1080 clincher front wheel was that it started getting “twitchy” even with small ambient winds…so much so that I probably wouldn’t run it in conditions where it theoretically would have it’s largest “gains”. Kind of a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” sort of wheel, if you know what I mean

Now then, it probably could “live on” a bit longer as a rear wheel for certain applications due to it’s depth, but if one looks at the data for an 808 FC vs. a 1080, I’m not sure who would logically pick the latter…

Plus it is heavy!

wait…

…let’s just say that rear wheel characteristics aren’t always about the single wheel drag charts
.

maybe the 1080 is the perfect kona wheel as it adds a little extra stability if youre running a 808 front.

Sounds like one of those “special cases” I was talking about
.

i would go h3 at kona though
.

I run a clincher 1080 up front. Regardless of wind. As a statement. And I will only trade it for a front disc.

Mine is bigger than yours…

Disclaimer: this only applies to triathlons.

Do we know if the FC808 will fit an existing P3?

Do we know if the FC808 will fit an existing P3?

yes.

as far as I know everything fits on the p3

though the HED C2 wheels with bulky tires are borderline in the rear.

I do the same and love the wheel. I have ridden it on some pretty windy days (20+ mph) with some trouble, but not much more trouble than other wheels. Once the wheel is up to speed it flies and does a great job of holding the speed.

What facts do i have wrong.

I am aware as i’m the one who questioned the zipp rep on the thread, Thats also why I specified “according to Zipp” vs according to Shawn.
