What happened to Cytomax?

WTF, Cytomax is now suddenly unavailable.
I’ve been using it ever since it came out 30+ years ago.

Apparently they were bought by Hormel in 2014 and then sold to Pepsi in 2019.
But now you can’t buy it any where.

The Tropical Fruit flavor has been my mainstay for all of these years.
Frickin’ bummer.

PS: What other sports drinks do you like that have an approx 2:1 ratio between Sodium and Potassium, which Cytomax has?

Here are Sodium/Potassium comparisons for these sports drinks.
I am surprised at how “relatively salty” Skratch is.
Also, remarkable how there doesn’t seem to be that many choices any more.

** Sodium Potassium Ratio **
Cytomax 130/60 2.2
Skratch 380/39 9.7
Gatorade 270/75 3.6
Hammer Heed 40/30 1.3
GU Roctane 320/50 6.4
Powerade 150/40 3.8

All the flavors were good but I always liked the fresh apple and the peach best- two flavors that I could not find in other brands and all cytomax seemed to settle better in the gut- and tasted ok even when warmed up on a Vegas summer long ride. Early on there was metabol endurance- the rasberry of that mixed with cytomax was great for me on Silverman/long training rides-- with water to wash it down of course,

But now you can’t buy it any where.

I dunno, Googleing it got me a bunch of places that appear to have it in stock. I took it all the way to checkout in two of them, just to make sure.

I have been using Hammer Heed for decades now. It is an excellent product with no added color or garbage. You can also buy Endurolytes(by Hammer) in powder form to increase the sodium content to your desired concentration. So basically making a custom drink.

Nuun introduced and endurance drink mix last year, might be worth a look

Just juming in to say ‘Kazakhstan is number 1 exporter of potassium’

EFS Pro:

Sodium (from Sodium Chloride and Trisodium Citrate) 500mg

15%
Potassium (from DiPotassium Phosphate) 220mg
.

Did you bother searching for it online? Seems available when doing a quick google search.

E-Fuel from CrankSports appears to match the Sodium/Potassium split (130/50) pretty closely.

I use the powder and gel forms.

Allstarhealth.com—my go to for discounted gel and powder drink products—seems to have it available.

Thanks - that’s the one place that has it in stock without jacking up the price. eBay has it for $60+!

It’s good to know that Allstarhealth is reputable.

Is there a particular reason why you still like Cytomax and haven’t switched to another brand? I used to drink nothing but Cytomax back in the college XC days, brings back memories! These days I’m partial to Skratch Lemon & Lime, sometimes supplemented with table sugar and sodium citrate.

Well now it says “Discontinued” at AllStarHealth (Both Apple & Tropical Fruit). Must have sold out due to a ST rush!

Gatorade Endurance is right about a 2:1 ratio between Sodium and Potassium. 300 mg Na to 140 mg of K per 12 ounce serving. https://www.gatorade.com/endurance/endurance-formula/lemon-lime/single-serve-powder

this sucks. I’ve used the orange-ish flavored Cytomax off and on over the years. My main concern has been that there isn’t quite enough carbohydrate in a normal dose, and doubling the dose is too sweet. For awhile I was mixing it 2:1 w/ HEED, but most recently I’ve just been adding plain maltodextrin to up the carb content. It changed the Glucose/Fructose ratio, but I never upped the carbs to the point I couldn’t absorb them.

I guess it’s back to GU Roctane for light training, BETA Fuel for more demanding scenarios.
