What does "sublimated" mean?

I’ll toss this one out to the ST masses. When talking about triathlon clothing what do the mfgs mean when referring to the cloth being “sublimated”?

I believe it means that the pattern / design impregnates the item, rather than being transferred onto the topp.

NB

If I’m remembering my terms right, the definition of “sublimation” is the process where a material (metal, water, whatever) goes directly from solid to gaseous state, without passing throught he liquid state. In the case of image transfers for clothing, I think it refers to the ink going from solid to gaseous states in the transfer process. But I could just be talking out of my ass too…

Remembering 15 years ago to chemistry 101, sublimation is a solid changing to a gas without entering a liquid state in between (please dont bother to flame me if this isnt totally utterly accurate - i failed chem miserably!!) If you have ever seen dry ice “melting” without leaving a puddle this is sublimation.

This process is the basis for “Dye sublimation printers” solid pigment is heated & blasts onto the object that is to be dyed.

Mr dude webster says
sublimate— to have a purifying or ennobling effect on.
Is tht Mr Tibbs??

Dirt

Yup, you got it.

It is referring to the ability to make custom clothing - club jerseys, etc… The ink does go from solid to gas to impregnate the fiber of the cloth making it much more durable. Silk screening is just a top layer.
