Seeing lots of these from worlds, but have never seen before

Possibly no chip. The few I saw did not have a swim split.

I saw many others with all the split times, and looked normal.
Talking to folks at the race, they had no idea
I have never seen this before, let alone the quantity of the NC’s
No Contender? Could it be for people that choose to wear a wetsuit in a non-wetsuit race?
I’d guess “Not Classified”.
For one reason or another there’s a question over their time or splits, so it’s under review until they issue a corrected time, a DQ, DNF or whatever else is appropriate.
Edited to add: the wetsuit idea sounds sensible too, if that’s a plausible scenario at that race.
NC stands for Not Classified teams in the ITU rule book (2.11c).
YES!

it meant not completed. that’s for all of the people pulled from the swim, but were allowed to do the bike and run. apparently it was a real mess, and i guess that’s what they came up with to avoid using DQ. i didn’t know how i’d done until i got to the awards since i saw someone out on therun course who had been pulled (but i didn’t know it).
from what i heard, the two northernmost (last) turn buoys started to givew into the north-to-south current and then people were both floundering and spreading out, trying to find the buoys. it was a power swimmer’s day, that’s for sure. the current was mighty strong. and then changed in close to shore at the end, so just as we thought we’d have a free ride into the finish we turned and it was both still hard and turbulent. weird day in the water. and HOT.

I talked to Vern, gold medal like you which congrads!!, got pinned under the water and just about quit since he was throwing up so bad in the swim. I hear the cruise ships may have impacted stuff. But if they had this type of issue in 2011, for a worlds event, the pits they did not fix it. So many who spent the time and money came away with nothing, but a NC.
