Personally, as a so so swimmer, and strong cyclist/runner, I say it’s great. However, to be fair, I think that the swim should be a bit longer. Make it an even 2K. That way you would be looking at a 3 1/2 to 4 hour race for the average person - assuming 30 min swim 2 hour bike and 1 1/2 hour run
11JUN…Muncie IN…man, if this doesn’t conflict with one of my local events, I’m there…but only if the beer/barbee is goin’ on. I can get into that at 1-2pm after a race…why wait until 6pm?
I always wanted to put on a race that is a double sprint triathlon.
750 meter swim, 20K bike, 5k run, 750 meter swim, 20K bike, 5k run
Instead of being a “big” race – make it a local “training race” to work some speed and practice transitions and have some serious fun.
Variety is the spice of life!! Why do one when you can tri two.
Doesn’t Jaul’s group and Gary Sato’s group do something like that occasionally down at Ala Moana? I’ve seen 'em on bike rides going like bats out of hell, and then seen them later running up Diamond Head Road as if in sprint-type race.
Sunset, tiki torches and all that!

This year at the Y-tri, we let one of the locals do the sprint and then the Oly right after! Since it was a two transition course, Kevin had to jump in his car and drive like crazy back to the swim. Are we all crazy or what!
Steve
Starting gun goes off – you run through a shower - then 40K bike, 10K run!!
My daughter did a kid’s splash and dash that was just that. Sprint up a slide down into an inflatable wading pool and then get on your bike. In the 90F deg afternoon sun, it looked pretty fun.
Yeah… Why not 4 k swim/on and off the bike/3 k run…![]()
That would be good…
And for the olympics it would be good for the television if they did:
ENDURO
5x(300/8/2)
That would be nice and great to watch

Naaah,
I’m all over those distances. I understand the angst of the swimmers, but for busy people it is much more practical to be able to run/ride right from your doorstep. I miss swims all the time because the pool is closed, or only open at lunchtime. Now if we all had endless pools then we wouldn’t have any excuses, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

These distances remind me of the old Baystate triathlon in Massachusetts. It was a real favorite of mine; either as the long race of the year or a good barometer in the build-up toward an IM. I did it ten years in a row during the late Eighties and early Nineties.
Baystate, RIP.
What if we launched a fourth event, all on the same day, and did a two person relay: 2k-4k canoe/20k bike/5k run, two in the canoe, one bikes and the other runs? The location for the races would be perfect. We are planning chip timing so the scoring would be well done.
Steve
The “long course” in Kingston, Ontario is very close 1500m-56 km-15 km. AFAIK, it’s actually the longest running triathlon in Ontario, going into it’s 22nd year now. They also have a 750-33km-7.5 sprint as well.
Check out this race I just read about: http://www.ulster.net/~sosnyta/course.html
It’s got the following format: B30/R4.2/S1.1/R5.5/S0.5/R8.0/S0.5/R0.7

Another race I have been considering trying to put on… (Not a Triathlon but “multisport”)
Two person team – One canoe or Kayak (one person paddles, one person swims - switch as often as you like) – then a 20 mile across land - two people - one bicycle (mountain bike/trail run) - again switch as often as you like – or maybe switch at checkpoints??
Anyway – it would be something different – add a little variety
So, what is the consensus Slowtwitch? We’re proposing the two traditional distances and adding the 3k/60k/15k and 4k canoe/20k/5k. Seriously, this is your opportunity to have an impact on the type of race the Muncie YMCA will offer in Muncie, Indiana in 2005.

Stindiana, I believe a race that pitted all of the disciplines against one another equally would make for an excellent attraction.
Some quick calculations and guestimations…
World class bike split for an hour on flat/great conditions…31mph.
World class run split for an hour on flat/great conditions…13mph.
World class swim split for an hour in calm waters…??3.5ish??
SOOOOO, have something that factors out like a 3.5mile swim —> 31mile bike —>13mile run.
For the metric crew a 5k/50k/20k would probably suffice.
That would rock. I think you would see more athletes with solely running or swimming background taking a look at the sport as a potential Olympic event. I think an Alan Webb type would crush.
Perhaps make the swim a 2K? Just so it would go up in proportion with the bike and the run. I guess that would make the logistics a disaster, though.
I’d definitely be interested. I’m in favor of any additional triathlons in the Indiana/Illinois/Michigan area, since I’m a bit of a race junkie. However, if it was a three-loop course, I’d probably end up sticking with the regular Olympic distance instead (which I’m assuming would be 2 loops for bike and run, and the sprint tri would be one loop) if I was going for a PR race… 3 loops would be okay, I guess, if it was more of a training event for me, but 3 loops would get a bit dull.
Also, June 11 is all well and good, but I want to add that I’ll be actively seeking out triathlons even earlier in the season. I know it’s still cold in May half the time around where I live, but racing my way into better speed has been a successful strategy for me, so if you wanted to push the date a few weeks earlier, I wouldn’t complain!
"What if we did a 3k swim? Two laps of the 1.5k? "
I like the 3K idea even though I’m not a great swimmer

La Corredora:
Yes, the logistics would be tough for a 2k swim. The Oly would be a 1-lap swim, two-lap bike and out and back rolling hills run. The bike course is just stellar! Almost all newly paved roads. The race date is pretty solid for the local race calendar and conditions over the 17 years of this race have been excellent. I have also followed the race early and often to work on speed plan in the past and it has been the best.
I will let everyone know when the new web page is up and ready for registration.
Thanks,
Steve
Or even better:
1k swim, 60k bike, 1k swim, 15k run, 1k swim
No wetsuits allowed.
Swim in wavy water - really wavy water.
Also, no drafting on the swim - :15 to drop back 3 meters every time you get passed.
I’ll sign-up if someone puts this race on.
