The Muncie Family YMCA is considering adding this distance to the two triathlon’s (400y/20k/5k-1.5k/40k/10k) already done successfully the last few years at Prairie Creek reservoir. The bike course would be 1-2 or 3 laps on excellent roads. The event will be held on June 11, 2005. Let me know what you Slowtwitcher’s think.

Here is last years web page for all you on-line registration junkies. We will update this for 2005 soon.
looks wonderful. very much in the spirit of Slowman’s anti-formula attitude towards race distances. just be sure to advertise 59k bike vs 60k bike if the former is really the truth
Sounds great to me. IMO the swim in an oly is too long proportionately compared to the IM and 1/2IM distantces. Keep in mind I like to get to land as fast as possible as the run is my strength.
Soooo…it goes without saying that you and FTG are not fans of half- or full IM formats either, right?
FWIW, I’d be just as happy with the longer swim you guys suggest. Th overall magnitude of the race (time and effort) is what’s appealing to me, not so much the breakdown by sport. An extra 16min of swim (at my paces) adds maybe 8% to the overall time. No prob.

How about this for a “triathlon” – Starting gun goes off – you run through a shower - then 40K bike, 10K run!!
In a olympic Distance race – Avg swim is around 30 min. compared to 1 hour 15 min. bike and a 45 to 50 min. run. This ratio is even worse in a 1/2 Iron and Ironman – The swim is already short – why make it shorter??
So, you see a race that already de-emphasizes the swim, and how do you want to improve it? By lengthening the bike and run, and further marginalizing the swim.
sweet! now all three distances are right in the “middle” between OD and HIM. bring it on.
oh, and please ignore FTG’s idea about splitting the swim to bookend the race…cramp city when you hit the drink after a hard run. or maybe that’s just me.
my FOP of the MOP swim is up to the task at hand in general. no wetsuit? sure, no prob. just don’t make my post-race dip another event, that’s all
bike club does a reverse (sprint distance) tri each year, and the first (and only) time I tried it I locked up from hip to toe when I pushed off the wall (pool swim). spent a minute massaging it out and watching my competition swim away. that I caught him anyway is immaterial…I don’t wanna swim after a run again!
Obvoiusly, safety is paramount, so the swim would have to be first- my swim safety dir. would kill me otherwise- But, I have always wanted to do a Tri starting about 6pm and have the finish a tropical barbee/beer bash!
