Enough to seriously discourage it, probably 15 mins
I think the 4 minute penalty is sufficient. I think it’s the enforcement that needs to be increased in order to seriously discourage it.
It’s sort of like traveling in the NBA. The answer isn’t to increase the penalty to a flagrant foul…just simply call it more consistantly and players will adapt.
So what happens when the enforcement is deemed “adequate”?
(I do agree with your assessment, it’s just interesting the response you hear from the officials in that they seem to be praising the job they are doing, yet then you see/hear how much drafting occurs, and you kinda scratch your head).
Make them do CF for 10 minutes
…and they were fucking smiling the same time they were cheating…Nice!!!
…and the next day they will get their M-dot tattoos…
Four minutes is not enough by a long shot. I have had multiple people tell me they would risk cheating because even if the lose four minutes they will make more than that up in the time spent drafting and the extra rest they have in their legs for the run. In my opinion first offense 15 minutes, 2nd offense DQ.
The drafting/Blocking penalty is currently 4 minutes for an Ironman.
Do you think it’s fair?
Should be longer?
other?
For example what should these people get? This was at about the 35 mile mark of an Ironman bike leg. They had been like this for the last 9 miles.
I’m pretty sure that pic is from IM Melbourne just recently, where the swim was cut to 1.5km. Drafting was a massive issue with so many athletes coming out of the swim at once. You had to queue just to get out of T1!
So situations are different. But i think blatant drafting with no excuse should incur a penalty greater than 4mins.
1.5—2km run extra, just before the finish line or something
This.
x2
I really like the idea of this. Make it like a biathlon when you miss a target. For every time you get dinged for drafting you have a 1.5 km penalty lap somewhere out on the run course. And maybe the marshals should dress up as a triathlete racing and be on a bike, as well, among the actual racers.
The main problem is that there are just not enough officials to properly monitor the entire 112 miles. Either race directors need to step up and request more officials or the race’s certifed governing body needs to increase the minimum number of officials for each distance race.
I’d probaly agree with that, I think the issue becomes what are they doing about it? I guess I just cringe when I hear the IM officials get on here and give themselves high fives for the great job they are doing for the limited resources they want to have. Just seems like a cop out, kinda like the shit pay that WTC does for it’s pro’s. It just seems like a high quality officiated race is well down on their priority list. Which is fine, but just dont give us lip service that it’s being officiated the best it can and that somehow that’s good enough.
