What do you think of Tyler's position

…Now that we’ve already discussed Lance, Jan and Bjorn. BTW, Tyler was 27th.

something is just strange about the whole setup. 2003 tdf was a thing of beauty for him and it’s tough to let go of the whole csc thing…

tyler in green on a bmc? wtf.

Can you post this for a comparision. This is Jaksche on his P3 for CSC. He won the event. This is how Tyler looked last year.

Thanks Hid. You’ll have to teach me how to do that.

Or could it be that his arms are pointed down on the BMC in turn raising his elbows and shoulders make them higher?

I’m not sure the top tubes make that much difference in Tyler’s position. On the P3 he is sitting way back on the saddle whereas on the BMC, he’s riding the nose of the saddle. This would give the illusion of a shorter top tube.

It seems to me these guys ride lower with their hands in the hooks than on those aerobars. Maybe it’s the photo angle, but I see lower positions on the guys out in front of the peloton.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know much about bike fits, but isn’t one of the goals of a proper fit to get your back flat? His back is flat in the most recent pic, whereas his back is pointed down in the others. Maybe his “hump” is lower than most peoples’. When I got my fit from Dave Bunce, he commented that no matter how high he put my aerobars, my back still got flat - thus I’m set up on the high side. Perhaps the decrease in aerodynamics may be minor compared to the increase in power and comfort?

The first worked but on the second one you have two “http://”

Okay, one more question: I want to post these pics on my club site, but the forum threads have no “mountain”. Is there another secret here?

Signed, blissfully computer illiterate!

Absolutely. Well, maybe. It depends upon how much power is gained and how much discomfort is important to you.

Simply put, it depends entirely on what times you get in real-world testing of different positions…INCLUDING running off of the bike. You should never sacrifice aerodynamics for power, nor for comfort, unless the better aerodynamic position followed by the run, results in a slower combined bike/run time, or, if the discomfort is so bad in the aero position that you won’t be able to maintain it for the duration of the race.

You HAVE to get out the stopwatch, then bike followed by a run in each position, to be certain. Do not go by “feel”, it will really fool you at times. Go by the clock ONLY…it doesn’t care how you feel.

All of this advice is pointless if you are just out there for the comradarie, exercise, and/or experience…and those are all good enough reasons to be out there!

That depends on if the forum supports images or html code (or some type of markup).

I’m tying to analyze Tyler’s position and can’t really come to any conclusion. I wish we had more photos. He certainly looks amateurish compared to what he looked like when riding for CSC.

I don’t know if the camera just caught him at a bad moment and angle. Could he have just been looking up at that moment.

If he rode in that position for the entire TT you have to wonder who on his team is setting up the bikes.

We need more photos.

It looks like he’s shifting or something in the picture, I think it’s just the way the angle and camera man caught the picture.

Got to see Tyler finish on OLN and he just did not look comfortable. Could be the downward arm tilt forcing his back/hips to sit up. The pics do make it look like the bike is too small.

I thought he looked like the typical Tyler - all over the bike.

One thing I did notice was a picture of David Millar “sitting up”. I’d say the pictures were taking at place on the course that didn’t allow for a total aero position.

I post pics here all the time and I’ve never used that mountain thing. I just right click on a picture, select copy, then open a thread and paste.
