What do you put on your road rash? In the past I would tend to let it be open to air with no ointments or anything if at all possible. However this time it’s on my butt so I’m going to have to use something to cover it. I’ll just use gauze or tegaderm for cover but figured I might consult the knowledge base for additional ideas on possible ointments or other thoughts.
I used a lot of Neo sporin last season

Silvadene- great stuff.
OTC: Polysporin and Telfa pads. Tegaderm works great, too, but can get expensive if the surface area is large and oozing plenty. If you can an rx easy, I second the Silvadene.
Bag Balm. Yup. In the green tin.
Salt, whisky and the hopes and dreams of defeated foes. Stuff like that.
We have a vat of Silvadene at the house. When the mister crashed in a crit, I made him take pain meds, wait 20 minutes, get in a hot shower and when he got out I would debride them and slather on Silvadene and telfa pads. We did this twice a day for about a week and he has almost no scarring at all…minus the surgical scar from the Humpty Dumpty job on his clavicle.
Non-stick pads with tape and alternate between neosporin/bacitracin and Vitamin E (you can just poke a hole in the capsules) to reduce scarring.
Clean it with hydrogen peroxide, dry it, cover in vaseline, cover with a bandage, repeat next day. If you let it dry it will scab and scar. Keep it moist and covered it will scar less.
My wife has a secret cream she uses for her complexion.
You have to crank on the dispenser a while but if you’re willing I am.
Vitamin A&D ointment or silvadene

The bottom line is you need to keep it moist so granulation (new) tissue will form within the first 3-5 days. All the methods mentioned are effective, especially bag balm. If you keep the wound bed clean, applications containing antibiotics such as neosporin won’t facilitate healing, they are primarily for treating not preventing infection but they normally don’t hurt the wound. Some applications are expensive and hard to find such as silvadene (also smells funny) and some people have reactions to neosporin. What dressing you place on top of the wound depends on the location and size of the real estate you need to cover. Tegaderm doesn’t stick well over vaseline based products and it costs a fortune. Cleanliness is imperative.

This… it’s also great on chaffing if you forget to lube up before a long ride.
Second on the Tegaderm. If you need more than a few, look to buy them in bulk online

tegaderm is great stuff, a little pricey but i think it helps a lot.
tegaderm x 3…heals up in a week and is pain free.
Tegaderm. Change it 2-3 times a day. Hopefully you know a nurse cause it gets expensive!
I’m from a bike racing background, so I am a road rash master (unfortunately!). Make sure you keep it relatively covered and moist. So, for the first couple of days, use neosporin and then, to save money, you can just use Vaseline. I “maintain” my road rash twice a day (ie. recovering with Vaseline and new bandage) for the fastest healing. If money isn’t an issue than Tegaderm is freakin awesome.
What ever happened to just spiiting on the wound and keep going? JK.
