What do you eat in your ironman bike?

I have been experimenting on the bike the last few weeks on my race day nutrition

I can easily get through on gels and Gatorade but my stomach really starts to get turned off to gels by about hour 4

Was hoping to find some solid food that I can also eat so I can still eat gels on the run without my stomach getting sour

Just wondering what everyone else is eating out there
.

I did gels last year in CDA and by the time I hit the run I was sick of them and have yet to have them since!! This year I have been switching between Stinger waffles and Clif Bars because it is on the bike courses of Ironman and the Clif Bars seem to be more filling and settle in my stomach just fine. Hope that helps!!

I’ve found swapping between different gel textures helps. GU chocolate outrage and GU peanut butter gels are quite thick (like hot fudge) while Powergel straw/banana is quite runny. The change of pace helps, as I want to stick with gels (hate trying to chew stuff on the bike). When I do solid food, it’s Stinger waffles (original).

3 bottles of Gatorade with 6 scoops carbo pro each. 750 cals each. 1 bottle every 2 hours (I’m 5:40 at whistler). That’s it. Nice and simple and I enjoy it

GU gel right on bike. At hour 1 and 3, Smuckers uncrustable sandwich (these are great because they are frozen, bring out on race morning and will thaw by the bike). Hours two, four and five gels. Never had stomach problems.

I ‘eat’ only powerbar gels with two bottles on the bike that have some sugar from beets and tart cherries + 1 scoop of Base amino. I have two bottles like this, otherwise, yep, all gels. Gross, but works wonders. Some cola on the run and/or Red Bull.

unless you want me to eat a book, you should redo that beet and cherries link

Thanks, made the change. The book isn’t bad either, but you are right, for an Ironman bike that isn’t going to do you any good.

I carry Ensure now and they work great. I also pack crustables. I can’t do GU much anymore. I also make sure to have a turkey sandwich waiting for me in my special needs bag.

I will occasionally still use an Ensure for breakfast as well.

Well - tomorrow is my first Ironman, but I have ridden the whole course 4 times with brick runs after and this has felt good each time - 1000 calories of infinit in one bottle with max electrolytes in the mix and 2 cliff bars. The cliff bars are kinda dry and take some water to get down, but it’s a nice break from the liquid and gets in a big chunk of calories all at once.

Ensure works great. Too bad they lost my special needs bag were I had it along with a PBJ sandwich for the last 56 of the ride, that I’m sure had a negative effect on the run.

I build a custom Infinit formula (2 bottles that I drink on the first 40 - 45 miles of the ride, with 64 grams of carbs each), one cliff bar at the start of hour 2, 1-2 bananas, cliff shots if they have them, more on course gatorade.

Really want to try those gu stroopwaffles,

And on long training rides I stop by a Dunkin Donuts and get a chocolate frosted… LOL.

Rice crispy treats and gel. They come in 90 cal packages and the fill my stomach and are good break from 100% gel nutrition

one word and dont tell anyone my secret: “Snickers” - tastes great and for me goes down easy.

Alternate 1 GU or 3 shot blox every 10 miles.

Thomas, the single biggest element holding me back from performing well in long course has been nutrition. I end up sick of eating sweet stuff after 4 hrs and get bloating GI problems. I know everyone says nutrition is the 4th leg of swim, bike, run. Hence I’m always interested in learning about new products like the beet/cherry stuff. I looked at your link to check out nutrition facts, it says the stuff contains 15 grams of carbohydrates in a 11 gram serving? I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, what am I missing? Ernie

I just discovered these all-natural energy bars. They are made by Amrita Health Foods.
I had been experimenting with Skratch rice bars, but those got messy and sticky (bad places to be).

The bars, I cut into bite sized pieces and start eating 1 every 15 - 20 miles or so.

The bars are nut-free and dairy-free, so no GI problems come from them.

I used 3 of their apricot/strawberry bar. About 200 calories each, with a front bottle of infinit.

I needed to get away from GU because I was starting to get gut issues …

Crank Sports (e-Gel) has a variety pack of their flavors and a comparison graphic to most other gel offerings. I switched to e-gel because of the same issues as stated here and have found the change quite satisfactory. MUCH easier on the digestive system compared to all others. I do throw in some Clif Shot Chocolate Cherry gel for the 100mg caffeine but sucking that stuff down takes a lot more effort than the easy flowing e gel.

IMO, well worth giving it a try. The powder form for water bottle is also excellent…(e-Fuel.)

Stroopwafels. Best thing ever.

Two three hour Ironman cocktail bottles
Natural Peanut butter and honey sandwich
