We just got the official word that school is not restarting.

So I’m curious what is taking up your kids time? With two parents trying to work from home and an only child- I need some fun things for her to do. She’s 10 but I’m curious what other age kids are up to as well.

  • Rubik’s Cubes - YouTube is awesome with “how to” solve tutorials -
  • Kendama’s - they are all the rage in the kids school - kindergarten through the high school. YouTube is again your friend to learn tricks
  • Minecraft
  • Other games on their Kindles through Amazon Freetime (age appropriate).
  • Reading - real books, not digital
  • Painting - watercolor at the kitchen table
  • detailed (aka hard) coloring sheets. Takes a crap load of time and concentration and they look amazing when done.
  • and I send them out into the yard when they are leaning towards committing mayhem or murder against a sibling.

Mythbuster jr on Hulu. They just launched a bottle rocket using human farts as propellant.

Horrible histories. A British dvd set that does sketches about rotten romans, terrible Tudor’s and the like.

The above may not be to a girls liking. There are a lot of poo references.

PE with Joe on YouTube. 30 minutes with Joe is better than 30 minutes with me saying go ride your bike or run for a half hour.

Poker. They picked it up real quick including bluffing. They like Draw, but didn’t like Texas Hold-em, or black-jack. We play (4 of us) where everyone gets 15 pennies. Initially 1 penny ante and 1 penny minimum bet. Once someone goes bust it jumps to 2, then 3.

FaceTime with her friends. Don’t know where you live but pitch a tent in the backyard and let her make a fort. My FIL sends crossword puzzles to my boys and if they complete them he’ll send a $2 bill in the mail.

The boy (15 y/o), video games, shit tons of online gaming. But, to his credit here, all his friends game so they’re interacting with each other all day long. He gets his school work knocked out in the morning. We have him reading 30 minutes a day, but it’s like pulling teeth.

My daughter (17 y/o), a little bit of everything. She’s far more well rounded but unfortunately her peer group doesn’t spend all their free time online so she gets bored.

-His (11yo) bicycle. He’s spending hours a day jamming around the cul de sac and the nearby park.
-Video games with his cousins online. Mostly fortnite, but it’s s way for them to interact and talk via the headphones.

Actually my teenage girls and I play a lot of badminton. We spray lines on the lawn, have good quality racquets and feather cocks, I mean, er, shuttlecocks. They are now very good and thrash any boys in the neighborhood.

One boy has a bit of a crush on my older daughter and came by last summer for a rematch after they had last played when they were both about 6 years younger. This boy is one of the studs on the high school baseball team and clearly thought he would win easily. She ran him ragged, hitting smashes, disguised drop shots, working him into all corners of the court. Poor kids was humiliated! It was funny to watch.
