What are your favorite podcasts?

I’m looking for something new.

Star Talk with Neil Degrasse Tyson isn’t bad.

Club Random with Bill Maher is tolerable, but he talks over his guests a lot, and his knee jerk response to a lot of things is to get very smarmy and condescending.

The Rest is History

Also In Moscow’s Shadow, Mark Galeotti’s podcast on Russia.

I like Mr.Ballen. It’s both a podcast and You tube. If you like the genre. MrBallen Podcast: Strange, Dark & Mysterious Stories Podcast on Amazon Music

American Skyjacker. It’s a true story about a DB Cooper 'wannabe" in the 70’s named Martin McNally. Only 1 season and ~10 episodes. Stuff You Missed in History Class, Smartless, and because I’m a KC Chiefs fan True Heights.

Pop culture timefillers:

“Rewatchables” with Bill Simmons et al and

“60 Songs that explain the 90s” (and now the 2000s) with Rob Harvilla.

Make you smarter stuff:

“Hi-Phi Nation” - a superb philosophy podcast (for a gateway episode search out the one about cover songs and Killing Me Softly)

“13 minutes to the moon” - a riveting BBC effort about the moon landings and then Apollo 13. I didn’t believe there could be a podcast that would reveal new aspects of those stories to me but I was dead wrong, both seasons are incredible.

History of the English Language
History of the Great War
Making Sense
Conan Needs a Friend
The Fighting Cock

This! I only discovered it recently so am still working my way through the 90s.

I like the Economist podcasts but a lot of the good ones are subscription only.

For other forum stuff I’ve been listening to SWAP and Empirical Cycling, and am a TTL fan.

Rabbit Hole Detectives

I’ve been listening to Real Survival Stories, and enjoying it. Keeps my mind off of the more global crises we’re living through.

Re. SWAP - I’m lifetime 2-0 on Dave Roche and I’m never racing him again to make sure it stays that way! For TTTTOF podcasts my go to is The Cycling Podcast. The right mix for me of fun but lazy (Watts Occurring) and overly nerdy (Lanterne Rouge).

i like “The News Agents” - but maybe a bit British for most US listeners. My usual lunchtime daily fix.
Others in my feed are - Lady Killers, Noble Blood, Spin Cycle, The Cycling Podcast (although not as good since Richard’s passing and Lionel going behind the scenes), After dark, The Rest is Money. i watch “the Rest is Entertainment” with Richard and Marina - wasn’t that interested in all the behind the scenes stuff on movies and TV - but can watch or listen to smart witty people talk about anything and find it interesting.

just started listening to “the rest is history” …and that 6 part series on 1968 is a masterpiece. Intelligent, brilliant story telling from the guy who literally wrote the book on Eugene McCarthy; but also somber, and then incredibly funny at times (had to stop running and listen to something else because Roger Ailes’ description of Nixon - when he was helping the campaign - was so amusing). Dominic and Tom are perfect for this. They use original sources, and relate it back to these being real people - not movie characters. Highly recommended - five stars.

Thanks!!! I loved “… the 90s” and am SO glad they rebooted it for the 2000s; nice that they started with “Mr. Brightside” Rob’s narration is so snarky, his pacing and his intonation are top-level

They have great guests, never take themselves too seriously and are funny. I’ve probably listened to about 2/3 of the free ones over the last year or so. Plan on joining their club to get access to the rest once I’ve run through the free ones.

I’ve got 4 go to podcasts

Cautionary Tales (Tim Hartford)
American History Hit
Short History of…
Real Survival Stories (Outside had one called Out Alive that they stopped in January of this year. Real Survival Stories fills that void)

I am a Sales guy, so I spend a lot of time in the car and I am 56 so I hate modern music. In no particular order:

Freakonomics - There is always something interesting and insightful.

Jockopodcast - Although after 6 years it has gotten to be very repetitive. This has been influential though, especially when I was struggling with career motivation. Jocko is a good facilitator of discussions, and with a few exceptions keeps the politics at minimum for a show based around a career Navy Seal.

I have gotten into skiing 3 yrs ago, and you can say it is my midlife crisis. By far this is my current daily go to.
I love the Blister Podcast network Podcast.

  • Blister Podcast - All things sking in general
  • Blister Cinematic - They review old ski and bike classic movies under todays eye. Very very fun. Hot Dog, RAD, Breaking Away, and Yearbook have been my favorite subjects. (Btw 40 yrs. later Breaking Away tells us a lot about our current polital environment and what happens when you dont keep up with change in a small town)
  • Gear 30- The gear side of skiing
  • Crafted - surprisngly this I find really good. This is lifestyle pod. They talk about well made goods. Lots of different things: Coffee, Whiskey, Watches, and cookware are some if the best topics.

The Powell Movement - He interviews top skiers and old and new.

The Fighter Pilot podcast. As title says. They talk about military aircraft. Individuals who have done special things in the militaty, and military systems and how they work both past, current, and future.

Fast Talk Radio. Cycling based Endurance coaching podcast. A lot of it goes over my head, but go information on the science behind endurance sports.
