What are some good places to go cycling in Miami?

I am going to be in Miami from Friday morning till Monday afternoon with time to ride. What are some good places to ride?

Any recomendations of good places to rent a bike?

How did you know? I’m right on the main cycling route! =)

Rentals - I really don’t know. Never had to rent anything! Try:

Key Cycling

I know they have cruisers and mtn bikes, but I don’t know about road bikes. None of the stores here that I know of will rent. You may have to try something more creative like Craigslist.

The most popular place to bike is Key Biscayne. There’s a $1.25 toll to drive over the Rickenbacker. I suggest parking in the first lot on the right after the bridge. This is where all the triathletes hang out. If you are lucky, Heavy D and LeeZee can be spotted here often. There is a designated bike lane almost the entire length of the Key.

If you start from the parking lot, you will go down the key, towards Crandon Park and Tennis Center (nice beach!), thru the village of Key Biscayne, and to Bill Baggs Park. Turn around at the entrance to Bill Baggs; they charge cyclists $1 to enter, and there’s no point.

You’ll see plenty of other cyclists out there. You won’t be alone. Your best bet is to tag along with a small group so that they can show you how to navigate the traffic and how to cross back to the other side once you go over the Rickenbacker. Watch out for debris on the roadside that falls off the trucks cleaning up from the hurricane. It was pretty messy there last weekend.

Also, on Sunday, there is a full and metric century ride leaving from the Homestead Speedway. Information can be found on the Everglades Cycling Club’s site: http://www.everglades-bicycleclub.org/activities.html. I will be doing the full century on Sunday.

Also, under their “rides” section, there is some information about group rides.

My wife and I have rented cruiser bikes from Mangrove Cycles right along the main drag in Key Biscayne a couple of times. They were the best deal when we were looking around and were super friendly and helpful. I am pretty sure they also rent regular road bikes as well. Actually the cruiser bikes were pretty fun and a hell of a workout as we biked all throughout Key Biscayne, Miami, and Miami Beach last fall getting ready for a scavenger race of sorts. That bridge going over to KB is petty tough on one of those bikes!!!

Thanks for all the good information.

Its impossible to compete with lauren (miami79) she always has more info than the yellow pages

Anyways. As she said a good organized ride on sunday will be the speedway century, it has 25mi, 62mi and 100mi distances and its fully stocked/supported. Its put up by Everglades bicycle club. You can register via active.com or I think starting at 6AM at the Homestead Speedway. We’ll be doing it, havent decided yet the distance since coach suggested the metric century not to impact a lot my training schedule.

On saturdays the club has a ride leaving from Monty’s parking lot in Coconut Grove leaving at 7:30AM sharp and going to Black Point Marina. Its a 40 mile ride. There is also another ride leaving from Pinecrest Elementary and another from around the old Parrot Jungle (57Ave and around 104 street and 112 street respectively) that leaves around that time, not sure if at 7 or 7:30AM

You can also always ride Key Biscayne and its always full of all kind of people.

Peace

This ride you talk about that leaves monty’s on saturday and heads south is it a roadie group and what is the pace, how many riders??? I might join that group for a ride.

D,

Ride is the everglades club ride. Its a lot of different people. Mostly roadies but some multisport athletes that ride their road bikes with the group. Size varies depending on whats going on around town or rides out of town. Most weeks I will say is probably 30-40 people in the main group. There is another group that ride much slower, mostly older people. I usually end up averaging around 18mph for the whole ride but its kind of misleading because there are lots of back roads and stops since we dont take old cutler down but the inner roads of coral gables, pinecrest, etc. There are several streches were the pace goes up to 26-27mph consistently, like SW 67AVE, SW87AVE and some other. In my opinion is not a highly demanding ride and they usually make 2 short stops to regroup. I enjoy since it adds a little flavor to training alone all the time.

Peace

Key Cycling rents road bikes as well
