What am I Supposed to Do

I had a reoccurring theme Sunday that I was not prepared for. I would go to pass a bike and as I was coming up to its rear wheel, it would come left to pass the next bike ahead. So under the rules, what am I supposed to do? Is it legal for me to go three wide if there is room in the lane for that? Is it legal for me to stay on that bike’s wheel while it completes its pass, so I can then complete mine? What if the bike in front of me ends up staying left to pass 2 or 3 bikes? Am I supposed to drop back to the legal 4 bike lengths (do you have to pass once you enter the draft zone, – or do you have the option to drop back if you decide you cannot make the pass in 20 seconds)?

BTW, I saw very little blatant drafting out there (IMKY), but there were so many bikes out on the course that they would bunch up from time to time as bikes going different speeds sorted themselves out.

And before any of you jump in and tell me that bikes don’t draft, its the people who ride them that sometimes do, I apologize in advance for my poor choice of phraseology.

In the first case, it is absolutely OK for you to pass a bike who is completing a pass, becoming the third bike across. In fact, it is exactly what you should do. And yes, if you enter the draft zone in a pass attempt, you must complete the pass or risk getting a penalty.
