Wetsuit Test Results

Finally posted.

Thanks for the review!! Much appreciated!

Great work! I wish the QR fitted right though, its the one I’m most interested in (because I own it).

thanks desert dude!
I got the xterra top of the line, so I can’t wait to see the results!
I appreciate your time and effort with this. Great job!

great, right after i ordered a new suit, figures! thanks for posting.

Very nice comparison and write up. Thanks for posting it.

That video demonstrating the stretch of the Synergy was just ridiculous! It was like a balloon or something…

Probably awesome if the fit is good, and I’d guess not fatiguing in the shoulders at all.

I was pretty impressed with the Synergy. If you’re wide through the shoulders or heavily muscled and have been having problems with fit in other suits, this sut should be a must look at suit.

Great review.

I liked all the extra points you added; very thorough.

Did 2XU and ORCA not offer you suits to test?

I figured with guns like yours you would require a suit like that
.

You know how I know you’re gay? smartass!

The 2XU didn’t arrive at TriSports.com in time.

At some point I had to limit the number of suits I was testing.

Well done … I’m surprised this hasn’t been more active with discussion. I am different body build, but have also found blue seventy helix as my best performance similar to your discussion. I own 2 orcas and a desoto 2 piece to get me there … I enjoy them, but they don’t swim as well. I’ve always found the flexibility of the back panels of the suit is most noticeable at about 3000 meters on an IM swim when the resistance starts to take its toll in a less flexible suit.
Thanks for the info … good stuff!

Nice write up. Statistically speaking, probably very little actual functional difference between the suits and an individual triathlete could conclude that they should get the one that fits best. Interesting though, about the “slow” feel but fast times with the Blue Seventy.

Thanks for the reviews Brian. My 13 year old Ironman fullsuit is due for replacement.
BTW Profile sells the Aquaman Goldcell relabeled with their logo and its on their dealer pricelist, although I havent called them to see if they have any in stock.

I think what this speaks to is that if the suit fits you properly and it’s the right suit for you - tighter( to a certain degree) is better than looser. My sense from talking directly to Brian about this, was that the Helix fit him best, thus he could wear it tighter with the least impingement on his stroke mechanics. Tighter = greater compression = better hydrodynamics = more speed.

It’s good for people to see this. In the end, as I have always said, it really comes down again to fit.

Fleck,
I’ll let DD speak for himself, but he doesn’t say that the fit was best for the fastest ( possibly not statistically different) suit … he tried to fit them all for himself as best possible. There clearly are flexibilty differences in suits that make a difference. Clearly old blue seventy suits don’t flex like the helix and my old O’neil makes me feel like a non-flexible mummy. Fit is always important … but I don’t think its the whole deal. Maybe DD will comment.

youre awesome, thanks a lot. it really helped me choose between the two suits i was looking at.

on the behalf of the entire ST, thank you.

he tried to fit them all for himself as best possible.

And that’s central to the whole thing - not every suit, even the right size suit according to that companies fit chart and parameters, of each brand, is going to fit Brian exactly the same. If you take 4 - 5 suits, they are all going to fit a bit different.

That’s why the rankings and the results need to be taken with a grain of salt - these are the results that Brian received. If you or I did this, with these 5 suits, we might get very different results!

I think your review was well worth reading. I have several wet suits and have been using the Zoot Zenith for the last two years and have been fairly happy with it, although some of the seam tape on the inside of the legs has come unattached (but the seams have not unraveled).

My reading of your report is that you generally were going about 30 seconds faster with all the wet suits then in just your birthday suit (or was it really a little Speedo?). However its not clear in my gin soaked mind what the distance was that you where actually using for the tests (several different distances were listed and I didn’t notice yards or meters). Please clarify what the test distances were, Thanks Tim
