So I can’t get aquaseal anytime soon (thanks to being 5 hrs away from any swim/tri shop and Canada Post being on strike).
I have a few “wear” points on my wetsuit between the legs that almost look like they’ve been brushed with sandpaper. I tried to cover it with some super-glue, but once it hardened, I think it got worse.
I was wondering if a layer of outdoor silicone would work?
Does anyone have experience with this kind of DIY wetsuit repair?
The key to wetsuit repair is an adhesive the not only bonds strongly with the neoprene, but is flexible or semi-flexible when dry. Super glue, to my knowledge is neither, and I think will if you are lucky, loose its bond with one of the surfaces under stress, or if you are unlucky, create a tear since the area will be more rigid, in which case a rip becomes a hole.
If Canada Post is on strike, find a shop that can ship UPS, FedEx, or DHL since those services will not be on strike.
I have a brand new TYR Cat 5 and after wearing it for the first time I found a very small cut in the suit. It looks like it could have been from a fingernail, not very big.
Anyway after the suit dried I used superglue to seal the hole and it appears to be working/holding just fine. I am not sure how well it would work if someone pokes a hole in a suit or stitching repair is needed, but for a small cut I would say Super Glue will do the trick.
I am sure the super glue will work for a while, but not the best solution, especially with a high end suit like the Tyr. I use McNett’s Seal Cement which is perfect for wetsuits. I really like it, I think it is the same as AquaSeal, but I picked up the 4oz can in black as opposed to my last tube of AquaSeal which was clear.
My Oneil Oasis which I have had for 23 years (god I feel old now) still is great and the little nicks and grabs have held up well. Especially since this was my main windsurfing suit for early spring and late fall, the boom, fin, and board deck can really do a number on the neoprene.
