since I started OSW this year I noticed some discomfort/ some tiredness in my right shoulder just after the first 1,000 meters.
I swam all 2016 OSW with my Desoto T1, I don’t remember having any issue before, the wetsuit is in good condition, just lost some flexibility in shoulder, but last year I used this wetsuit two/three times a week June through October…
Since there are good deal now I was wondering whether if:
a) Roka Maverick Pro II (they have a 30 days testing period)
b) Zone3 Vanquish
c) Replace the pullover of the Desoto T1

I’m skinny, I don’t have big shoulder…
Any feedback on Roka and Zone3 are much welcome.

No interest in BlueSeventy Helix. They have some of the thinnest shoulders of any wetsuit and trial period as well. I would say THE ABSOLUTE thinnest shoulder but I haven’t been keeping up tabs per se of each and every manufacturer’s shoulder thickness.
I’ll check on the Helix too, apparently there are deals also on this one.
Question: reading reviews, few customers complained about the fragility on the wetsuit. Is this something that you observed ?
ive used the helix as well as the vanquish. I don’t find much difference between them but my swimming technique is not that nuanced. I find i have to massage the zone 3 a little more to get it fit just right. I don’t find there was much shoulder tension in either of them.

Most wetsuits are made of the same relatively modest number of neoprenes on the market, of course with some variation, so I’d take people’s comments about particular suits and especially suits from particular manufacturers being fragile with a very big grain of salt.
And to answer your original question, it seems very unlikely your existing suit suddenly deteriorated. Might another suit be better for you? Possibly, and if you buy from a seller with a try-and-return policy, there’s no harm done, other than the time invested and possibly shipping costs. But based on what you wrote, I’d probably stick with what you have if it were me.
I don’t have experience with the Desoto, but moved away from a TYR to a ROKA Pro and it has a LOT better mobility. Roka has had exceptional customer service, so you don’t have anything to lose in trying it. Just return of it doesn’t work for you.
If your shoulders are getting tired, I highly doubt it is the wetsuit. Yes I’m impartial but I have never heard of anyone having a shoulder mobility problem in a De Soto suit.
is just over a year old (about 60 sessions between training and racing).
Suit is tight (Size 3), but I don’t feel restricted, last year didn’t have any issue even after the first session.
Nowadays just after 1,000 meters I feel the need to alter the swim style/rithm to be more relaxed since my right shoulder start to work a little too much.
If it was your first ows you may just be getting used to the wetsuit again. That said how tall are you and what is your weight? A size 3 is a pretty small top. I’m 6’1 165 ish and not a big upper body. I wear a 4 top and bottom. I tried a 3 top a few times and definitely felt too tight. I would email desoto or Emilio and he can make sure you’re in the right size. If you’re in the US I can send you a 4 to try I’m not doing Tris this year so I don’t need it anytime soon.
Do you think it is possible you have swum enough / eaten enough to go up a size? You could always try the next size top. The ability to have different tops and bottoms is the reason I use DeSoto
I’ve been having the same kind of since this year first OSW practice, as of today almost 3 weeks (about 8/10 times).
I’m 5’6 140 ish, I remember having chatted with Emilio last year before buying the suit to make sure the size was the right one, I even lost few pounds since then.
Thank you for your offer Grant.
Hello. Emilio here. How old is your T1 Wetsuit? Did you k on way we have a trade in program that can get you into a brand new T1 for 30% off? I M happy to personally assist you with your current issue. Please email me if interested.
I had shoulder surgery in December ('16). My T1 sleeved top doesn’t hurt my shoulder for HIM distance swims. Honestly though, I don’t swim in waters that are so cold I can’t get by with the speed vest.
Unless you’re swimming in really cold waters, I’d get the vest and be done worrying about shoulder fatigue.

Cool! I love my T1. I can’t recall exactly, but I think I bought it in 2008 or 2009. Still in great condition. Do I get much more from a newer model?
I have the Maverick Elite II and love it. I didn’t think I was a strong swimmer after putting in over 100k yards in at the beginning of the year but once I hit the open water in the new suit, I was stunned at my speed. I know it sounds like an advertisement but I’m able to save so much energy on the swim and still come out of the water either 1st (AG) our top 3. The suit fits great and there are no feelings of tightness our restriction in my shoulders. I wear a sleeved tri-suit under and feel there is plenty of mobility.
Probably a re-post but read the articles on ST this year (February) by Dan re: wetsuits. They were very helpful and saved me $400 (would have bought the Mav Pro).

That is so nice to hear. 9 or 10 seasons. I would attribute that to taking good care of it and to actually using it. Storing any wetsuit and never using it will cause it to try up like an old rubber band.
