I’ve looked at both Orca and Speedo wetsuits and find that I’m one size in height and the next size down in weight (5’10 140lb).
Are any particular brands cut smaller for skinny guys?
Alternatively, should I go for one that’s the correct height and too big around the arms/shoulders, or go for the one that’s the correct fit and short in the torso?
And please don’t tell me to go for a Desoto 2 piece, as I’m in Australia and I can only access the usual brands (Blueseventy, Orca, Speedo, 2XU).
I used to wear an Orca in the MT (previously 6.5) but found it was a bit baggy around the upper body.
xterra makes some skinny (tall) suits… I’m short and fat, so didn’t order the skinny guy ones… BUT I did start withe thier entry level suit, upgraded to the Vortex3 (armless) and after a 30lb weight loss settled on the x2 pro sleeve suit… of the 3 it is my favorite(should be for where it’s at on thier food chain) they do a lot of specials/discount codes. good value on sale.
An Orca in 6.5 is huge for you…I’m your size (half an inch shorter) and wore a 5 last year. The previous two seasons I was in a 2XU size XS. Of the two the Orca Alpha was a better cut for my body shape. I’ll be in a blueseventy size SM this season if that means anything…
You can afford to go smaller on modern high-end wetsuits…they’re that flexible.
I firmly believe from personal experience that a triathlon wetsuit has to be tried on before being purchased. Are there any local tri stores where you can do that? Different brands fit quite differently. I had to try on several to find one that fit me well. I ended up with a Zoot Zenith 2, which I love. 2xu, Rocket Science Sports and Blue Seventy did not work for me. Each person is different. Another thing is to find a salesperson who really knows how to fit you. One of the most important rules is that if the wetsuit goes on too easily, it is too big. It should be a bit of a struggle to get it on (but not too much).
6’0" and ~145lbs, I use a Medium in the Blue70 Helix. Ideally, I’d be in a Small-Tall (SMT), but they didn’t have it when I ordered it. The Medium fits fine anyways, still nice and snug. A little water gets in around the neck, but not enough to cause any problems that I’ve noticed.
The nice thing is that you can mix and match the tops and bottoms, so for me a size 5 on the bottom and 4 on the top fit perfectly. I was never able to get a correct fit on any other brand because if the bottom fit the top was too big and if the top fit, well, my legs just were not that small.
I’m 5’9.5" and at 145, use a straight MEDIUM Blue Seventy Helix. Fits great, and was recently first in the AG out of the water in a race (not that I’m a great swimmer), but it certainly allowed me to hold my own in the swim. I have a 29" waist so we’re pretty close to the same size by your notation/post. I’d suggest the Blue Seventy Full Helix.

I have the same experience - 5.11 X 150lbs, narrow shoulders: Fits perfect in Size 4 bottom and size 3 top.
