So I just did my first 1/2 in the crazy hot and humid weather we had in the northeast on Saturday. Between the sweat and sponges with ice water my feet were soaked, pruned and raw by the end. It has me worried if they would have been torn up during Ironman Florida Next month.
The spare pair of socks in my special needs bag on the run of Ironman Cairns was the best thing ever. It rained the whole race, so my feet were like yours, and the fresh socks I’m sure prevented blisters and a painful last 15km.
I don’t know what you would do for a half other than try and avoid dumping water on them. I had the same thing happen to me at Rev3 Dells. Learned my lesson the hard way but had a pair of socks/vaseline at IMMT Run SN and my feet were awesome!!
I guess you could lube them up at the start of the run. Vaseline works for me in all points of friction.
Hmmm, I get blisters after a 1/2. I’m not happy. I also wear “double” socks which are supposed to stop blistering but they don’t, at least not for me. I haven’t tried vaseline yet and wouldn’t unless I first tried it in training but, I think that may work. Also, this didn’t happen as much with previous shoes but do with the newest one (same manufacturer but newer version). So, part of what I plan to do is to switch to another brand and see how they treat my tootsies. I’m worried that in a real wet (downpour rain) run, my soles may get too wet and rot!.
Take 20sec. in T2 to put bodyglide on potential hotspots (arches, achilles, between your toes).
For long runs I’m a fan of Injini socks (the ones with separate toes). They are a bit slow to put on, but for an IM it’s worth it.
On the water logging side, I’ve been using the Adidas Boost. The midsole doesn’t become a sponge. I love my Altras, but the foam weighs a ton when wet.
Seriously?
Yes. Even one of the old flat Adidas had built in hole (hyper speed I think). I wear no socks, make sure the shoes drain well (holes help), problem solved. And I ran the OtillO like this
Same race I slapped Vaseline all over my toes and around the ball of my feet… They were drenched within a few Kms so different socks I didn’t think would have stayed dry for long… I went single ply socks too… My feet came out in great shape… Much to my surprise…
I noticed tighter shoes as well would have helped as they got sloppier on the feet as the race progressed leading to a little banging of my toes at the front of one shoe as my foot slid forward I the shoe in foot strike… Made a nail drop off but didn’t bother me during the run…
All the best.
