I am hoping this is just an overuse type of pain and it will go away. I’m just coming back after a torn tendon.
I am having fairly acute pain at the upper portion of my right calf muscle, just below where the knee creases. It is slightly toward the inside of my leg, and is sore to the touch. I don’t have any bruising or anything, but I do feel a slight bump there.
As background, I have been training about 13-15 hours per week, and doing Spinervals 3-4x per week, some for as long as 3 hours at a time. I spend a lot of time in the aerobars on the trainer. I also feel like I drop my heel a bit before starting the upstroke of the pedal cycle. I don’t have any pain while running, but do after I am done. There is pain when I am cycling, but its not anything that will force me off the bike (yet).
Anyone ever had anything similar? This is not what I want to be dealing with! Everything was going so well!
I’ll start with the usual advice of seeing your healthcare professional, because without being examined no truly accurate assessment can be made. But to give you my 2 cents as an ER doc you might have a Baker’s ( or synovial) cyst. This is tissue that normally lines the joint surface that “balloons out” behind or around the joint and when it becomes large enough is usually painful. The posterior aspect of the knee is a common location for this condition. The treatment options range from doing nothing to minor surgery to remove the cyst.
Get it checked out, an ultrasound or mri will confirm the diagnosis but a good exam is the crucial first step.
I second the ER doc…see your doctor and get it checked out. I also second the idea that it could be a Baker’s Cyst. It isn’t pes anserine bursitis though…the pes anserine bursa is on the top-front of the shin just to the inside (the proximal anteromedial tibia). If it hurts in the back and higher up, its not from that.
I’ve had the same exact thing for about 4-5 months now. I started feeling it shortly before IMFL. It never inhibited me, but was just sort of there. Since IMFL, I’ve done next to nothing except bike a little bit, trying to let that and a couple other things heal properly and fully. The thing behind my knee just won’t go away. My wife is a doctor - cardiology fellow actually, so take this with a grain of salt - and she said it is not a baker’s cyst. Probably just an overuse injury. I saw the post here about saddle height being too high, and I’ve seen that suggestion elsewhere, so I’m going to have to try it. But if you find a solution or get a diagnosis, please post it or PM me, I’d like to know.
