Weird bridge incident on morning ride

Sometimes we ride to the island community of Grosse Ile in the morning. Nice ride. There is a bed and breakfast we stop at. Good coffee, great muffins.

Two bridges access Grosse Isle from the mainland: The Free Bridge and the Pay Bridge. We pay .50 cents a cyclist to cross the Pay Bridge, the Free Bridge is free.

Yesterday the main span of the free bridge sunk 6 inches. The bridge was closed to traffic. An interim asphalt ramp was installed to facilitate the drop to the bridge deck, and it was re-opened.

Weird. It was the talk of the island this morning. Locals say the Free Bridge is going to close for months this winter for maintenance.

If the bridge sunk six inches in one day it definetly needs some extensive maintenance. I am surprized that they reopened it at all. Our local neato bridge is the wooden covered bridge over the Cass river, good views all year but fantastic in the winter.
