Weight vs Aero: Kienle's approach for Wiesbaden

He just posted this pic on facebook:

I’m no Scott expert, but apparently this is the older, but maybe lighter Plasma LTD instead of his usual Premium. Also front wheel shallower than usual…
In the comments he says the bike is under 7kg

Either way, he is a beast and this bike is cool.

would be fun to simulate the course and figure out if 303/disc or 404/808 or 808/808 etc was fastest.

won’t matter much either way though

Having done that course I’d be surprised if maximizing aerodynamics is not the way to go. He’ll no doubt be extremely fast either way though…

One would think that if he was concerned enough about weight to drop to a 303 on front, that he would also drop to an 808 on back over a disc, no?

Seems like a 404/808 would be better than a 303/disc in terms of both weight AND aero. The 808 only gives up a small amount to a disc in aero but I thought was dramatically lighter.

Also, for handling at speed downhill, It’s want a wider FC rim on both front and rear in that case.

depending on which disc wheel the 808 is only ~80 to ~100 grams lighter.

and since Kinele is fast, the aero difference between all these wheels at low yaw will be minimal unless it is real windy

so, it really doesn’t matter much. gonna have to get hard core on analytic cycling to guess at the best combo.

Jorts!!!

Jorts!!!
Those crazy Germans…

I thought it was bigger than that.

I suppose I’d ask Zipp what they might suggest I use if I was a Pro… since they are probably giving me or subsidizing my wheels.

Personally, I think a 404/808 is about an ideal combo for everything as a single wheelset… but that’s just me and what I have now. They seemed to climb just fine, but more improtantly that wider FC rim feels great cornering and has a nice smooth ride since you a little lower tire pressure.

Yeah that bit probably is not real. The arguments about it get into deep deep technical detail and you can do a search but in summary, don’t count on that being a real thing. The straighter sidewall shape means you need less pressure for the same ride comfort, rather than getting free ride comfort etc etc plus endless arguments about how much extra air volume there is or isn’t and how much that matters or doesn’t =)

He should really ride H3s if he wants to go fast…

not a bad choice for him if he is willing to run 20mm tires!

Jorts!!!

It’s even weirder than that, they’re like jean knickers, knee length. Jickers, I guess.

Maybe his jorts have a chamois in them, like the old Carrera kit.

I can’t even see the bike to comment…my eyes can’t get past the jickers.

Oh.

Aero and Light is Right. Kienle’s approach is 100% BMANX approved.

Also rocking the converted RD with large pulley. Very nice.

It doesn’t hurt that he’s got the engine to boot.
