Weight loss: Anyone else chew and spit?

it might be a good idea for you to talk with a pychiatrist(sp?) that really isnt healthy.
.

I hope this it limited… That’s a problem in my book and I’m sure a number of nutritionists would agree.

That just sounds gross to me, do you carry around a trash bag with you at all meal times?

Eat healthy, train hard, you will keep the weight off.

As someone who struggled with bulimia for years, I feel qualified to say, “Please, PLEASE Stop Doing This!”. You are starving your body and developing some really mentally unhealthy eating habits. I’d go as far as to say that you already have some majorly unhealthy mental eating habits.

If this is something you are doing by choice, STOP! If, in being honest with yourself, you can’t stop by choice, then please seek medical advice.

Really, are a few minutes off of your finish time really worth it?

This pretty much is bulemia, you’re just skipping the swallow and regurgitate bit. Like everyone else said, you have an eating disorder, and would be best advised to try to fix it. Note: apparently most bulemics are far from thin, just like you. Your size does not exclude you from having an eating disorder.

but if his eating disorder has no negative effects, what difference does it make?

The kneejerk claim that he is starving his body is completely irrational. We have no idea if he is starving his body or not.

Actually, this reminds me of a weight-loss thing that came out a few years ago. People would buy a spray that they shoot onto their tounge and would taste like chocolate or something else and it would sate their appetite. There was also a version of it made to administer insulin.

However, maybe you could just make smarter choices. I can’t imagine how this can satisfy any hunger. Just eat better, drink more water, stop being a fatass in general. Har har.

Not good…

That is not normal.

Do you do this at all meals? All the time? If so, you are seriously depriving yourself of essential nutrients. I’ve dealt with my own disordered eating for a long time; trust me, this is a bad idea and not a good way to lose weight.

If you put good wholesome food into your body when it’s hungry, you can’t help but see eating as a spiritual experience… which does not include chew and spit. I hope you and your wife would reconsider this.

This is an eating disorder not otherwise specified. Even if you are eating a balanced diet and just doing this with junk (desserts, chips, etc) it still is not healthy and in the end really won’t help you lose weight anyhow. You would be better off enjoying small portions of “junk” food in addition to normal meals.

From the website eatingdisordersonline.com:

Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS)
EDNOS is basically used when a person does not fit neatly into one of the diagnostic criteria’s. Below is a list of criteria stated by medical professionals. For females, all of the criteria for anorexia nervosa re met except that the individual has regular menses. All of the criteria for anorexia nervosa are met except that, despite significant weight loss, the individual’s current weight is in the normal range. All of the criteria for bulimia nervosa are met except that the binge eating or inappropriate compensation mechanisms occur at a frequency of less than twice a week or for a duration of less than 3 months. The regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors by an individual of normal weight after eating small amounts of food (eg. self-induced vomiting after the consumption of two biscuits) Repeatedly chewing and spitting out, but not swallowing, large amounts of food.
While it may not be as serious as anorexia or bulimia, it is not normal or healthy.

Note in my irrational kneejerk claim that there is no mention of starvation, just an eating disorder.

I think the poster was referring to my “kneejerk” claim. Which I stand beside as a been there/done that Bulimic. The outward eating habits are just the sign, it’s the mental and emotion habits that are underlying that are the greatest risk… and lead the the rationalizing of all sorts of behaviors. It was better worded though by the poster who said their bodies were being starved of nutrients. Regardless, I think we all pretty much agree that this is not healthy behavior.

It's funny, my wife used to think that this was a sign of a serious eating disorder (even though I am far from thin)

Your wife used to think correctly. You don’t have to be thin to have an eating disorder. Being obsessed with your food intake to the extent that it plays emotional game with you is not normal.

dude. that is totally messed up man. totally messed up.

What’s the big deal? This really isn’t any different than people that chew gum. Some people are mentally strong enough to do something like this without moving on to the whole swallowing/throwing up thing.

What the other guy is doing isn’t bad for him. It’s not gonna do much to help him lose weight, but it’s not that big of a deal.

There is a huge difference between this and chewing gum. First of all, this is an obvious departure from normative behavior: Everyone chews gum, but only a tiny portion of the population would ever consider doing this.

Secondly, and more importantly, chewing gum is not intended to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to live a healthy, never mind athletic, lifestyle.

Saying “chew and spit” is the same as chewing gum is like saying sniffing glue is the same as having a beer.

What does it matter that it’s not normal? Most of america thinks being a vegan is not normal - if done correctly it’s fine. Most of america would think authentic food from most of the asian world is not normal - Japan has one of the highest life expectancies and China for all its “backwardness” isn’t far behind the good ole usa.

Secondly, and most importantly, the OP didn’t say he was not eating a healthy diet or not getting enough nutrients. He appears to be trying to avoid the extra cals that he doesn’t need. He chews a piece of steak or whatever. It’s just like chewing gum, only different flavors. Not a big deal.

In a lot of ways, sniffing glue and having a beer ARE alike, so…

“the OP didn’t say he was not eating a healthy diet or not getting enough nutrients”

Frankly, if the OP is practicing chew and spit, i believe it is indicative of a generalized misunderstanding of healthy eating habits. It appears that some more qualified ST’ers including at least one nutritionist have already posted to this. I’m not saying that the mechanics of chewing gum are fundamentally different, i’m implying that there is a greater issue to be addressed here.

If we are to believe that the OP is still objective about his diet, we would be better off advising him to consult a professional about building a healthy nutrition plan to compliment his training and weight loss goals. However, others have suggested he may be suffering from an eating disorder, in which case the above along with psychological council ought to be sought.
