my goals were no days using the unhealthy coping skill. had 5/7

goals this week: no days using unhealthy coping skill, journal daily
My biggest win last week was getting out on a new trail system, which was well-groomed and a lot of fun to ride.
I am, sadly, back to the real world, having spent the last two weeks essentially doing absolutely nothing of any use. We opened the 2026 work year with the news that my manager’s position is being eliminated, which means a reorg, which will mean my fourth manager in the last two years (and I had three in the two years prior to that, so). Assuming, of course, that I still have a job post-reorg.
My goal for the week is to ease back into something that looks like a routine. Exercise every day. Not eat like a 6’4 man who just rode a century. Track those calories. And my PCP also looked at my girly parts and decided I should have a biopsy, so I guess I should stop procrastinating and schedule that. Woo!
I also need to get my professional shit together, but there’s no point even trying while we’re still throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing how much of it falls off.
Ugh, manager roulette sucks, sorry to hear that. I’m getting a new one too, but he’s a transfer and known quantity. Sorry to hear about the health concerns.
Started a three time a week training program on the bike that so far feels pretty good. Today was 2x20min @ 94% of FTP, which felt pretty good except for the unheated garage in 25° temps.
Mondays and Wednesdays will be in the pool if I can get out of bed early enough. Wednesday’s goal will be another 1100yds. This weekend should be skiing, although it’s also going to be 45° and raining, so we’ll see.
2 days in a row without the unhealthy coping skill
journaled yesterday
A good week training wise last week. The current plan is pretty much alternating 60 to 90 min runs and rides plus one day of 60 to 90 min kayak. Only change to that last week was Wednesday which was planned as a few hours hiking but ended up being 15 kms of very steep hike/jog/run. I had to go into town Saturday morning so I joined in Parkrun just as a jog and chat then did a 25 min jog in the hills and finished with 2 x 400m fast. Sunday was mountain bike in the bush. I was pretty good about hitting my strength work too.
The challenge this week is I am the “responsible adult” for my 5 yo grandson. School holidays and I am in charge of him from 6.30am until around 4.30 pm. To complicate matters is the weather.
Monday all good and got out for a decent mtb ride 80 mins. in the afternoon mostly bush trails. Hammered a 5km gravel section with some tailwind. Also push-ups, abs and bench press.
Yesterday (Tuesday). I didn’t get out until 5 pm. Biceps, triceps, split squats, stand ups, high stepups. 6 pm trail run in the nearby National Park. 38 deg C (100+F) so took it quietly. Lots of hills, felt good, ripped off a fast last downhill trail km. Stopped watch at 61 mins. Still 37+ at 7pm. Skipped the 6 x 100m strides.
So today, tomorrow and Friday are all forecast temps 43 to 46 deg C. Not sure what that is in your measure but I know it’s friggin hot. I hope to get out for 60 to 90 mtb today. Maybe after 6 and stay in the depths of the forest. Also aim for clean and press and overhead kettlebell swings. Tomorrow’s running might be tough. Probably similar to yesterday’s. The forest is a bit cooler. Also aim for 3 to 4 songs worth of indoor rowing. Friday is a planned kayak so not so bad. We will see how it all pans out.
I am happy to be retired and no work politics etc. I was lucky the last 7 years of my job was in the secure high needs psych unit. 4 clients and 2 staff on the floor with them at all times. Our clients were considered too “behavioural” to be in standard psych wards. Managers/admin were all too scared to come in so we were quite autonomous.

2/2 week on not using the unhealthy skill
2/2 journal
Good job Dr.
It was a really good day here yesterday. I got to the pool in the morning, and got 1100yds in. I’m still working on building skills back up, but felt much more coordinated in the water.
Cruised through my trainer session on the bike, I think the run training this fall is really paying off across the board.

It’s been a Week.
Monday, as I said, we got the news that our boss was being laid off. Wednesday we got weather that canceled school, so I had to find an alternative rehearsal site for a 100-piece concert band during an ice storm. Thursday, I dragged my sorry ass to the pool during the after-work rush and didn’t let my anxiety stop me from swimming (win!!). Today, work finally got to the full-on RIF and laid off my direct peer, but I’m still employed and expecting to make it through 2026.
I haven’t been able to focus for more than approximately 3 minutes at a time, but I finally feel like I can let go of all the air I’ve been holding.
Current standings: 2x gym, 1x PT, 1x swim, 3/5 days food tracked.
My wife was sent home from work Wednesday morning, early stages of the flu. So she sent me out on the bike for an hour to beat the heat while she looked after the grandson. It was getting hot by the time I was back home, nearing 40 deg C at 11.30. Was hitting 43 just after lunch. Son in law (plumber) got sent home re OHS laws once it got that hot so we got a reprieve from childcare duties. 46 deg on the back verandah in the afternoon but I did get out for a walk and did some rowing in the corrugated iron shed. Heat training!
Thursday with my wife at home I was able to sneak out early for a run before grandson was awake. Glad I did as it was a horrible day weather wise. 44 deg but windy then thunderstorms. Stormy, windy night. Pretty stressful when you live in a fire zone. My wife’s flu wasn’t too bad other than a bad cough. The young fella has been snotty all week.
Friday. No childcare today, daughter rostered off. It was threatening to be a nightmare day. We already had plenty of fires throughout the state. I did my kayak session in the little reservoir up the road, only 600m per lap. By the time I finished the winds had arrived. 50 kph dry northerlies. The afternoon was just about monitoring the Fire app. Late afternoon wind change blew thick smoke in then we had a small fire break out down the road. Under control quickly. But a no fun day. We were lucky but not so many others.
This morning was coolish, winds have swung. Fires all around the State but none too close to us. Put in a hilly hike, a few strides then a 5 km hilly run with 3 x 4 mins. Able to relax today. The wife is shaking her flu, hoping I don’t get it.
I’m glad you still have a job and sorry about your peer’s position.
Good job getting that swim in!

Not as active as I wanted to be, but got in a couple short trail runs. Almost time to start training for my April race.
