I’m looking for a good wedding present for a couple I know. The husband is about to leave on deployment, about 3 weeks after the wedding. Any good ideas? I’d rather not just get flatware or linens from the registry.
This is a bit pricey, but perhaps you could go in on it with some other folks:

Would help the newlyweds stay in touch…

Good idea, but not really authorized onboard Navy ships on deployment. Thanks.
By the way, keeping in touch isn’t as hard as it used to be. E-mail is fairly reliable most of the time.
One suggestion someone made was to get them two nice clocks that they could set to the same time. I guess the idea is that they would be on the same time even though they are all the way around the world from eachother. Kind of sappy, but I’m not making much headway on anything else.
Roger that…when I hear deployment, I usually think of being on the ground, not on a boat. Forgot about the e-mail bit, but its nice to be able to talk, too.
Are digital cameras OK on a ship? The Pentax Optio is a nice little camera…he could take some snaps and e-mail them back.
Perhaps a gift certificate to a nice resort so they have something really cool to look forward to when he gets back?

The digital camera ideas is a good one. I took my camcorder on my deployments. I really like looking back now at the footage. I did have to wrap the whole thing in aluminum foil to help with the radar when I filmed topside.

Phone cards–lots of 'em

Plane tickets for 2 to some far away land when he does the R&R. My squadron did that for one of my guys (OIF)

A vest (you know the kind I’m writing about). “She” will thank you for it just as much as he will.
