Websites that cause "virus alerts" on my computer

Sometimes I’ll click a link to a website and my iPad/computer will go crazy with virus alerts, “unsafe” website, etc.

One such link is in the sig line of a poster on this forum.

What does this mean when this happens? Are people who run theses usually up to something nefarious or good it just be trying get into your contacts so they send annoying spam to all your friends using your email as the sender?

Anyone know?

In my case it means I did not update Wordpress as I was supposed to and I have a virus that will send you emails for Foakleys if you sign up for a newsletter. Nothing bad other than that, but I would not click through the warnings at the moment. I have two developers on it and they said it is no big deal, 48 hours to fix and then proper updates will prevent it in the future. So essentially, if you ignore updates you can catch some viruses. I’d imagine some can be pretty bad, but dont know more about it than that.

You got me. My only interest in racial justice discussions has been to direct traffic to my site to skim credit card numbers. And you call me crazy.

Then delete the link until you know what the hell is going on. Geez.

Good idea. I wasnt aware of this until last week, as it is not a website in current use, and I was not on Slowtwtich all that much, but yeah, I’ll take it down until site is fixed.

They’re usually more nefarious than seeking your email address. They want you to download and install the “fix” which then installs an actual virus, and you’re in deeper trouble. Sometimes it’ll encrypt your hard drive and you’ll have to pay a ransom to decrypt it.

If he did that he won’t be able to infect computers of ST forum members.

Shady. Really shady.
