Wearing Hincapie kit = condoning doping

Does anyone else feel this way?

Every time I think about buying new kit and I look at Hincapie stuff, I know I would just feel nauseated having that guy’s name plastered all over myself. Also, I would feel terrible rewarding his doping by paying for his product. He would not have this company, a grand Fondo or any notoriety at all if he had not stolen money from all the clean riders that he forced out of the sport or did not have the results of the dopers.

Short answer: yes.

I feel the same way.
Same feeling every time I see somebody rocking the LA colors too.

yes and most of my team kits are from his company unfortunately. Fortunately I train in Desoto most of the time even if I am in the group.

Ever think about suggesting to your team using a different supplier that does not support doping?

Actually I think NO.

it’s no different from:

  1. Riding a Trek
  2. Riding a Specialized
  3. Wearing Oakley
  4. Running in Nikes
  5. Wearing Rapha
  6. Riding a Cervelo (anyone remember Riis and Basso)
  7. Watching the Tour de France on NBC Sports
  8. Watching the Tour de France on a pirate EuroSport or TF1 feed
  9. Supporting team BMC
  10. Wearing any MLB hat
  11. Watching any NFL game on TV

I guess I could keep going. All these businesses benefited from athletes who were on dope.

This is a depressing post, though I’m not sure why it means wearing Hincapie does not mean condoning doping. If anything it means doing any of those things could support doping. Though I think the Hincapie kit is just so direct and blaring and obvious. 0 degrees of separation.

I used the wrong word. Club not team and I have dropped out of the club, but I do ride with them on occasion. So I am wearing Desoto and they can’t fire me
I am a former competitive bodybuilder and gave myself a lifetime ban of competing back in 1996. I speak and counsel on occasion. So I was kind of hoping some of these guys would have shown some remorse for what they have done. Honestly I have yet to see any of them show remorse.

Kind of sucks to see them posted on banners to be the “honored” guest at a Gran Fondo. If they showed remorse I would be quick to forgive just as I would hope to be forgiven.

No. I’m as anti doping as anybody but buying or not buying Hincapie kit isn’t going to make a hoot’s worth of difference in the end in the doping battle. If you don’t like it don’t buy it but you shouldn’t make any value judgement about anyone that does wear it.

At one point I was really struggling with this question. Your post reminds me of a thought about the employees working at Hincapie or those making clothing for Hincapie. I want them to be employed and support their families. To punish Hincapie personally would be to put their jobs at jeopardy and I don’t wish that for them.

He’s saying he “doesn’t feel the same way” …no that it’s not condoning doping. And I sort of have to agree with him. If I only bought from companies that have not benefited from doping my choices would be mighty limited to the super high end craftsy small shop stuff that’s never made it to the big leagues. Because once you’re part of the circus, you’re getting a benefit from other’s doping. Like it or not.

I think a lot of (most?) people who buy the kit don’t even know his history or have connected the dots so I can’t make a value judgement against them. But I do know… and therefore I cannot wear it.

Benefit from and support are distinct though. Many of the above listed attempt (at least publicly) amends when they find athletes that do PEDs.

This is a good post.

I wouldn’t buy any Hincapie gear at this point, but may feel differently in the future. I believe in redemption and George does seems to be doing things to give back to the sport, but he’s still got a ways to in my book.

Yes! And I will no longer use Infinit products because they sponsor his cycling team. I had used Infinit for years. Great product but Hincape had little to no punishment for his years of cheating and lying. I know, my actions will do very little.

Don’t forget using USPS. How dare every company that sends me a bill force me to condone doping by using them.

Actually that might have been the only company dumb enough to believe Lance wasn’t doping. Oh and maybe 24 Hour Fitness. They went pretty deep with Lance too…

and btw - who pays their bills using the postoffice? I write and mail about 5 checks a year and most of them are for race entries.

That is EXACTLY how I feel, and I’m glad to see others speak up. While I wear the best Tri gear and would not buy a Hincapie, I do have a vest of theirs that I owned before the news broke. I drew a red slash through it to show my disgust, and will not sport any of his stuff with any signage, which means I won’t buy more. I’m glad my Tri gear is light years ahead of his anyway so it’s a no-brainer.

I pay my bills online but I still receive paper bills through USPS (so I technically still use them). Had too many bills screwed up to trust companies to autopay and the wife likes having an actual bill vs electronic.
