I’ve signed up for one of those obstacle course mud runs and it looks like it’ll be fun. I usually wear my Garmin forerunner for races, but am thinking I should do without it this time because I have no idea how “rough” the course will be and would hate to damage or lose it. Plus, I don’t think I’d get any data worth anything because of possibly having to wait around to clear obstacles and I will probably move next summer so won’t be around for this next year so I can’t compare my times from the previous year.
I wouldn’t. It won’t give you very valuable data as those events are usually run a little, wait a little for the obstacle to clear, do the obstacle, and repeat. I did a Tough Mudder this summer and would have not gained any useful data. Fun event though!
Any suggestions on what to wear? I am usually in my VFF and was thinking about using them again since they won’t be too heavy if they get soaked in mud. Just running shorts and t shirt or is something tight fitting better?

When I did the tough mudder I wore those Nike compresszion shorts under normal shorts and a normal cotton t. I wore some old running shoes because they were pretty ruined after.
I don’t know about something tight fitting it might be nicer to have a little more shirt when you’re on your belly crawling over mud and rocks
If the mud run is one of those where you only occasionally take a dip in mud then I would say go for it. The big mud run series events seem to be that way. I’ve also done 2 really hardcore ones where I got seriously battered and bruised. If your mud run is anything like that one then I could not advise you more strongly against it.
After I got done I said if I do one of those again I would just wear a jammer. Not many places to fill with mud on one. I should clarify that a bit more, I would wear an old jammer!
Having done both shorter 3 mile Spartan races and 10 mile tough mudders I would skip the garmin the data will likely be junk unless you are in the elite wave and there is zero likelyhood of waiting at obstacles.
Any watch with a stop watch function would probably be a better bet.
Decided not to wear any kind of watch and just have fun. Just running shorts and cotton t shirt. It was a lot of fun, but having several waves 15 minutes apart made it tough to gauge how far ahead/behind I was from the leader.
This summer, it was so hot, I realized the earbuds were blocking a key cooling channel. I was getting dizzy cuz my head couldn’t breathe. I also was finding the timex distracting on road runs. About 2 months ago, I totally disconnected myself and got into just being in the moment. I’m running so much better.
When I saw your OP, the answer seemed so obvious, I thought it was a troll. I guess I’m too old.
